At Mirror Lake Elementary School, the staff is committed to providing experiences which will prepare students through learning today for living in our constantly changing world. Through the involvement of home, school, and community, students will experience opportunities which promote individual growth and respect for self and others in a safe and caring environment. The school has 473 students i

n kindergarten through 5th grade with 67 staff members. Mirror Lake has several programs to serve and support students including Program Challenge for gifted education, special needs pre-kindergarten, special education programs, and ESOL. The school also has extra-curricular and academic programs like 4th and 5th grade chorus, Road Runners, F. Club, MLES Reading Bowl Team, MLES Garden Club, MLES News Team, and BETA Club and our Google Gravity Games box car team. Our school participates in the Partners in Education Program which is a system-wide effort to link schools and businesses in an educational partnership. The After School Program at Mirror Lake provides students with a safe alternative for after-school activities. Students complete their homework, participate in physical fitness activities, and have time to play and build social skills. In the After School Program we have been able to establish our Garden Club which in the last three years has harvested over 160 pounds of vegetables to share with our school community. The garden is planted and maintained by our after-school students. Our Golden Garden Day in the spring engages our school community to help set up our plants for the summer and fall months. Our Golden Garden gives our students the opportunity to get hands-on experience with growing vegetables, fruits and herbs in our school grounds. In addition, it has provided a platform to provide lessons on water conservancy and the protection of local pollinators, birds and butterflies. Mirror Lake Elementary is committed to teaching and using 21st Century technology skills. Each classroom houses an interactive white board and document camera. There are seven mobile laptop carts shared by grade levels giving students daily access to technology. Students also have Wi-Fi access and are able to bring their own digital devices for special projects.

Congratulations, Julia Sweeney 👏

Julia Sweeney is a dedicated and passionate educator proudly serving as Mirror Lake Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year. With nearly a decade of teaching experience under her belt, she has devoted herself to nurturing students and making her classroom a safe space that allows students to realize their potential and develop their skills.

“I believe that teaching is my purpose,” said Sweeney. “Pouring into the lives of students each day and getting my cup filled in return is something I cherish. I do not take for granted that I might be the smile that brightens a student’s day or the word of encouragement that a student needs to make it through the day.”

Sweeney’s journey in education began by receiving a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, and she has also obtained a master’s degree in teaching for art education. As an art teacher, her belief is that each student she teaches has unique talents and gifts, and she strives to allow students to explore their artistic potential beyond the boundaries of core academics.

Outside of the classroom, Sweeney says that painting is one of the biggest ways that she relaxes and escapes the stresses of everyday life. Along with this, she also enjoys being outside in nature and spending time with family and friends.
