The High Cost of Unspoken Words: Why Your Brain Won’t Let Go of the Silence
Grief comes in many forms, but perhaps the most exhausting is the loss that leaves you without an explanation. Whether it is the sudden end of a long-term relationship, the deafening silence of an estranged adult child, or the quiet house left behind after the passing of a loved one, the result is the same: unspoken words trapped in the nervous system.
When a connection ends abruptly, our brains naturally enter a "loop." We replay conversations, formulate questions that will never be answered, and carry a heavy weight of emotions that have no place to land. Your body remains on "High Alert," searching for a safety it cannot see.
The Science of Release
Research into grief work shows that the simple act of putting words on paper is one of the most powerful somatic healing practices available. It is not about the other person reading the letter; it is about honoring your own heart.
When we write to the one we have lost—or the one who went silent—we give our pain a voice. We stop trying to bury the emotion and instead lean into it with compassion. In my own journey, I resisted this practice at first. I thought, “How can a letter they never see possibly help?” But when I finally allowed the words to flow—and importantly, read them aloud to myself—something inside me exhaled. I created an internal landing strip for my grief.
