Peace and Black tech brilliance, family! ✊🏾💻 Coach Victor here, and today we are breaking down one of the most powerful tools in your computer science toolbox: VARIABLES.
Whether you are in the 3rd grade just starting your coding journey or an 8th-grade scholar building your own apps, you need to know how this works! Let’s get into it.
📦 What is a Variable?
In computer science, a variable is simply a digital storage box with a label on it. It holds information (we call this data) that your program needs to remember. The coolest part? The information inside that box can change or vary while the program is running—which is exactly why we call it a "variable"!
Let’s break it down for the culture: Imagine you have a fresh, clear drop-front sneaker box in your room. You slap a label on the outside of that box that says "Game Day Kicks" (this is your variable's name). The box itself never changes. But the shoes you put inside the box? Today, you might store some classic Jordan 1s in there. Tomorrow, you might swap them out for some fresh Dunks.
The label (Game Day Kicks) stays the exact same, but the value inside the box updates whenever you need it to! In code, we do the exact same thing, but instead of sneakers, we store things like numbers, words, or user choices.
🔍 Where will you find Variables in a program?
Every app, video game, and website you use relies on variables to keep track of what is happening. Here is where you might spot them when you are building your own code:
🎮 Your High Score: When you are coding a game and your score jumps from 10 to 100, that score is being saved and updated inside a variable!
👑 Your Player Profile: When an app asks for your name and then says, "Welcome back, Malik!"—the code stored your name in a variable (like playerName = "Malik").
🔋 Health & Energy Meters: If your character drinks a potion or takes damage in a game, a variable is running in the background doing the math to update their health bar.
🎵 The Cookout Playlist: If you design an app to play music for the family reunion, a variable keeps track of exactly which track is currently playing so the music never stops.
You have the brilliance to be a creator, not just a consumer. Keep building, keep innovating, and remember—you are the blueprint! ✨

If we want our children to own the future, we have to teach them to build it. 🌍💻
Take a swipe through this post. This isn't about teaching your child to just type code into a screen. We are talking about Cultural Algorithmic Thinking—reminding them that the very foundation of computing is rooted in African fractals and indigenous mathematics. ✊🏾
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: AI. Parents, we know you’re seeing the headlines. But in our programs, our Black and Brown youth aren't just learning to use AI; they are learning Ethical AI Literacy. They are learning to audit the algorithms, spot the bias, and build technology that actually protects and uplifts our communities.
We know you've been looking for a space where your child isn't "the only one." A space where their brilliance is the baseline, not the exception. That’s what we do here. No more "glorified babysitting" tech camps. We are building digital self-determination.
🗣️ Real talk, Family: We see the likes, the shares, and the saves on our posts! We appreciate the love! But a "like" doesn't secure their seat in the future. The world is moving fast, and our kids need these skills now.
Don't let them just consume technology this summer—let's teach them to create it.
👇🏾 Stop scrolling and secure their spot. Drop a 🚀 in the comments and I’ll DM you the direct link to register for our upcoming sessions, or click the link in our bio right now before seats fill up!

Our founder, Victor Hicks sat down to write a letter to regarding Georgia’s SB 540. While student safety is paramount, the current "chatbot legislation" risks creating a new digital divide.
At CodingwithCulture, we see daily how AI tools empower Black and Brown youth to visualize, create, and build confidence. By over-regulating these tools in the classroom, we aren't just "protecting" students—we’re potentially barring them from the tech fluency required for the 21st-century workforce.
Georgia is becoming a global tech hub. Let's make sure our K-12 students have the keys to get in the door. 🔑
