For the first time ever, "The President's Own" United States Marine Band will perform at the Carroll County Schools Performing Arts Center, 775 Old Newnan Road in Carrollton as part of the band's National Concert Tour, performing a free concert on October 24 at 7:30 p.m.

For full details, please visit www.marineband.marines.mil/Tour. Free tickets are available starting September 24 (limit 4 per request). Seating is general admission and ticket holders must be seated 15 minutes prior to the concert start time; remaining seats will be released to the standby line at that time. The venue has a clear bag policy for attending guests.

“We are incredibly excited to continue the tradition of our national concert tour,” Marine Band Director Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin said. “Musicians of the band are more eager than ever to share their musical talents with audiences live, and in-person on this year's tour.”

Nowlin has programmed musical selections in the style of the band’s 17th Director John Philip Sousa, who initiated the concert tour tradition in 1891. Concertgoers can expect a mix of works including traditional band repertoire, Sousa marches, contemporary compositions, vocal and instrumental solos and a patriotic salute to the Armed Forces.

“We have tremendously appreciative patrons who come to Marine Band concerts for all types of different experiences, so our programs are designed to include a great variety of music that mirrors the wonderful diversity in our national musical heritage,” Nowlin said.

Since Sousa was first granted permission to tour the country by President Benjamin Harrison in 1891, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band has delivered a White House experience from Washington, D.C., to the far-reaching corners of our nation, and these special concerts have been shared by generations of Americans. During the 30-day National Concert Tour, the Marine Band will perform 27 concerts in the following states: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

The Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. Known as “The President’s Own” since the days of Thomas Jefferson, the Marine Band’s mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Congratulations to Mt. Zion Elementary School First Grade Teacher Laura Vincent who has been named the first-ever West Georgia RESA Literacy Teacher of the Year! As part of the Georgia Council on Literacy's statewide Literacy Teacher of the Year program, Vincent will join 15 other winners from Georgia's Regional Education Service Agencies in competing for the statewide honor. The Georgia Literacy Teacher of the Year is a new award that recognizes teachers whose students show the greatest growth in reading. Vincent now represents teachers in seven systems across west Georgia and in dozens of schools. The Georgia Council on Literacy will announce the statewide winner this December in Atlanta. Congratulations and a big thank you to September 2026 24STRONG Award winner Roopville Road Baptist Church! This month's award is focused on community partners, and there may not be a bigger one than RRBC. Not only does the church provide a high level of support directly to Roopville Elementary School through school supplies, volunteers and staff support, it supports the entire district by opening its facilities for a variety of large-scale events and ceremonies through the year. As one nomination stated, "they consistently looks for ways to invest in children and educators and to use what they have to strengthen the larger community." They have built strong, lasting relationships that reflect a genuine desire to see our students, faculty, staff and families thrive. It's a Future Focused Friday at Carroll County Schools, and we're shining a light on Temple Middle School where middle school students are learning hands-on skills that lead directly to career pathways in their new STEM Innovation Lab! Training modules allow them direct experience with electrical wiring, crime scene investigation, plumbing, small engine repair and more. Similar STEM Innovation labs opened this fall at Bay Springs Wildcats, Mount Zion Middle School - Carroll County, and Villa Rica Middle School. We're focusing on the future so students are ready whatever lives holds after high school graduation -- enrolled, enlisted or employed.

All 12 Carroll County elementary schools have been awarded the John Hancock Banner and Proficiency Ribbon this year, the Georgia Department of Education announced today, joining only 307 schools statewide receiving the honor for proficiency in cursive writing.

Recognizing that cursive writing strengthens student confidence, connects learners to history, and supports essential cognitive development, the Georgia DOE honors schools that demonstrate excellence in cursive instruction through the John Hancock Award.

The award celebrates elementary, middle, and high schools that go above and beyond in teaching cursive writing – a skill that builds fine motor strength, enhances literacy, and allows students to engage meaningfully with historical texts in their original form. As part of Georgia’s English Language Arts standards, cursive writing plays a vital role in preparing students for academic success and lifelong learning.

"Cursive writing is about much more than penmanship — it supports the development of skills students use throughout their learning," said Dr. April Aldridge, GaDOE Deputy Superintendent for Teaching and Learning. "It also gives students the ability to encounter documents like the U.S. Constitution as they were originally written, creating a tangible connection between literacy, history, and civic understanding. We are proud of the Georgia educators who continue to provide students with these important learning opportunities."

Cursive instruction supports students by developing fine motor skills, strengthening spelling and writing fluency, supporting memory and cognitive development, and allowing students to develop a distinctive personal signature.

Schools are recognized for the John Hancock Banner based on the cursive proficiency of their students. The schools where 90 percent of students can write their name in cursive receive the John Hancock Banner and Proficiency Ribbon. Schools where 90 percent of students can write both their name and the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution in cursive are awarded the John Hancock Banner and Ribbon of Distinction.

Congratulations to our three finalists for Carroll County Schools Teacher of the Year -- Lauren Wells from Villa Rica Middle School, Alyson Monroe from Mount Zion Middle School - Carroll County, and Kaleb Hyatt from Bay Springs Wildcats! These three finalists will continue in competition until the winner is announced at the board meeting on October 22. All teachers of the year from all county schools will be honored that night with a reception at the Carroll County Schools Performing Arts Center prior to the board meeting.
