International Overdose Awareness Day — August 31
An overdose can overwhelm the body's most vital systems—especially the brain, heart, and lungs.
With opioid overdose, for example, opioids can suppress the brain's drive to breathe. As breathing slows or stops, oxygen levels can fall, potentially causing brain injury or death.
Knowing the signs can save a life. Slow or stopped breathing, extreme sleepiness or inability to wake, pinpoint pupils, and blue or gray lips or fingertips can signal an opioid overdose.
If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately. For suspected opioid overdose, naloxone can rapidly reverse the effects of opioids and restore breathing. If available, administer it and stay with the person until emergency help arrives.
Today, we remember those lost to overdose, support those affected, and raise awareness that overdose is preventable and help is available.
