Thriving Beyond Breast Cancer: Transform Your Self-Talk

As a breast cancer survivor or thriver, you’ve already shown incredible strength and resilience. Now, it’s time to turn that same determination toward transforming your self-talk with this empowering cheat sheet. Let’s rewrite your story with words that uplift and support your journey.

🌟 Recognize and Redirect Negative Self-Talk to begin to heal the inner wounding of the diagnosis and the challenges that follow.

CATCH yourself when negative thoughts creep in. Keep a journal or use your phone to jot down any self-deprecating comments that cross your mind. 📝 Remember, awareness is the first step to change.

Example: If you think, “I’m not strong enough to handle this,” pause and note it. [Awareness is the FIRST STEP!]

CHALLENGE the validity of these negative thoughts. Ask yourself if there’s concrete evidence for what you’re thinking or if it’s an emotional response. 🔍

Example: When you think, “I’ll never be as healthy as I was before,” challenge this by listing the healthy habits you’ve maintained or started.

REPLACE the negative with a positive or realistic statement. Flip the script and tell yourself something empowering or acknowledge the progress you’ve made. 🔄

Example: Instead of saying, “I’m always going to be tired,” you might say, “I’m learning to manage my energy better every day.”

🌱 Cultivate a Positive Self-Image

AFFIRM your worth daily. Use affirmations to reinforce your self-esteem and remind yourself of your inherent value. ✨

Example: Start your day by saying, “I am worthy of love and happiness,” while looking in the mirror.

VISUALIZE your best self. Imagine a version of you that’s thriving, happy, and healthy. Let this image guide your actions and self-talk. 🌈

Example: Picture yourself completing a walk or run for breast cancer, crossing the finish line with a sense of accomplishment.

🤝 Connect with Others Who Uplift You

SURROUND yourself with positive influences. Spend time with friends, family, or support groups that encourage and believe in you. 👭

Example: Join a breast cancer survivor group where you can share experiences and uplift each other.

SEEK feedback when you’re stuck in a negative loop. Sometimes, an outside perspective can help you see the positives you might be missing. 🔄

Example: If you’re feeling down about your recovery progress, ask a trusted friend to help you see how far you’ve come.

💪 Embrace Your Journey with Kindness

PRACTICE self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a dear friend. 🤗

Example: When you’re frustrated with your body, remind yourself of the incredible battle it’s fought and won.

CELEBRATE every victory, no matter how small. Acknowledge your successes and use them to build more positive self-talk. 🎉

Example: Celebrate the days when you feel good, have energy, and can engage in activities you love.

📈 Set Realistic Expectations

ACKNOWLEDGE that progress is not always linear. Accept that there will be ups and downs, and that’s okay. 📉📈

Example: On days when you feel like you’ve taken a step back, remind yourself that healing is a journey with twists and turns.

DEFINE success on your own terms. Set personal goals that are achievable and meaningful to you. 🏆

Example: Instead of comparing your recovery to others’, set a goal to take a walk outside three times a week.

📞 Reach Out for Support

DON’T hesitate to contact a professional when you need to talk. Whether it’s a life coach, therapist, or counselor, getting help is a sign of strength. 🗣️

Example: If you’re struggling to shift your self-talk, schedule a session with a life coach who specializes in working with breast cancer survivors and thrivers.
