This year I delved deeper into ancestral healing, and it has been profoundly powerful for me. The greatest takeaway for me was that the some of the painful or limiting stories we tell about ourselves may stem from our ancestors’ traumas, and although it is initially hard to accept that we must do the work to heal them… once we do it is truly a sacred and transformative experience.

I recently heard someone say, “if you have a hard time finding a reason to love yourself, perhaps love and find ways to honor your lineage. Understand that your ancestors have gone through so much pain, suffering, laboring and simply enduring to survive just to bring you here to this very moment.” That really stuck with me.

When we keep our focus small and get caught up in the everyday worries of life, we can often forget the greater picture and story of how we came to be.

It’s true… for many of us our ancestors did their very best, just like we are now, to ensure that we could thrive and live a better life than perhaps they could have ever imagined. However, that could have come at a great cost especially if they had to endure traumatic circumstances, much like we see unfolding in other parts of the world right now. It’s very sad, and it painstakingly reminds me of my own roots and why healing ancestral or intergenerational trauma is so important.

We come from so much wonder, love, suffering, adapting, resilience… and helping our ancestors heal as well as healing ourselves is one of the highest expressions of self-love and spirituality.

Pictured here is my little self with my paternal grandmother, strolling under the sakuras ironically in the very land that was the cause of our ancestral trauma. Ofc we did not think of that at the time, but the complexity of emotions that come up for me and the many juxtaposition of themes in this photo really leaves an impression on me. I didn’t know until later that this photo came into my possession for a special reason.

Fast forward to the present- both she and I were ready to heal our shared ancestral wounds and stories in the spiritual realm, we held one another in unconditional love. She showered us with sakura petals, as a gift.🌸

Film stills from the quietly powerful short film The Recorder Exam (2011) directed by Bora Kim. This one hit so close to home as it takes place in Seoul circa 1988, illuminating the experience of a young girl named Eunhee. (Last slide image is a mini surprise and not from the film hehe)

This film reminded me of how and why art is so important to humanity, and how it can help some of us in our healing.

Some of us carry wounds from childhood that are tucked away so deeply in our subconscious, and yet those wounds continue to plague us into adulthood. Then you watch a film like this, and you are provided with an honest outsiders perspective of what your young self could have endured.

Seeing this perspective can be powerful, moving, and awakening as it cracks open a part of ourselves we so fiercely stored away to protect the most tender and authentic part of us- our inner child.

What’s a film or art work that had this effect on you? 🫶🏼

Think of your negative feelings as your internal compass, or gps, guiding you into the direction of where your higher self is. 🧭

Become self-aware, and seek to understand whatever you’re feeling instead of distracting yourself away from it. Such a wasted opportunity for growth! 😞

What are your emotions telling you lately? 💚

Some thoughts I had before 2024 comes around, although I think these questions can be helpful to ask any time of the year.
