An electric streetcar in El Paso in 1902

Streetcar service began in El Paso in 1881, and grew quickly in both service lines and popularity. The streetcars connected El Paso neighborhoods with Fort Bliss and provided a better way to travel across the border into Juárez, Mexico. In 1901, El Paso Electric Railway Company formed and began laying the first tracks for the new electric railway. In 1902, mule-drawn streetcars are replaced with electric streetcars.
