Here is a great post on "Dealing with Test Anxiety"! Let me know what other topics you're interested in.

School is back in session and that means “fun” tests to measure your progress! Leading up to these tests, do you have any of these symptoms: nausea, difficulty breathing, headaches, frustration, fear; fast, shallow breathing; inability to concentrate, flashbacks about past performance, dread about failure or feelings of impending doom before the test, anger, shame and/or sadness? If so, you (like many students) may suffer from test anxiety. Don’t worry, there are several strategies to calm those nerves and perform at your best.

Pre-test Tips:

1. Preparation is Key:

· Study Regularly: Don’t cram the night before. Regular study sessions over a period help reinforce material better.

· Understand the Format: Familiarize yourself with the test format and types of questions to avoid surprises.

2. Healthy Lifestyle Choices:

· Sleep Well: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep, especially the night before the test.

· Balanced Diet: Eat nutritious meals; avoid sugar and caffeine as they can heighten anxiety.

· Exercise: Regular physical activity boosts mood and reduces stress. (If you play sports or take PE, you’re covered.)

3. Effective Study Techniques:

· Active Learning: Techniques like summarizing information, making flashcards, and teaching the material to someone else can be very effective.

· Break It Down: Break your study material into chunks. Tackling one section at a time makes it less overwhelming.

4. Mind and Body Practices:

· Breathing Exercises: Simple deep-breathing exercises can calm your mind. Try inhaling deeply for four counts, holding for four, and exhaling for four.

· Mindfulness Meditation: Spend a few minutes meditating to keep your mind focused and calm.

· Positive Visualization: Visualize yourself succeeding in the test. Positive thoughts and affirmations can reduce anxiety.

Practical Day-of Test Tips:

1. Arrive Early: Give yourself plenty of time to get to the testing location to avoid last-minute panic.

· Bring Necessary Supplies: Gather all the materials you need (like a calculator, pencils, ID) the night before.

· Read Instructions Thoroughly: Take your time to read all the instructions before starting.

2. Stay Positive: Replace negative thoughts like “I can’t do this” with affirmations like “I’ve got this.”

3. Pace Yourself: Manage your time well. If you get stuck on a question, move on and come back to it later.

4. Stay Focused on Your Work: Don't worry about how other students are doing. Stay focused on your test.

Post-Test Self-Care Tips:

1. Reflect, Don’t Dwell: Reflect on what went well and what didn’t, but don’t beat yourself up. Use it as a learning experience.

2. Reward Yourself: Treat yourself to something you enjoy once the test is over to release any built-up tension.

3. Seek Support:

· Talk About It: Sharing your anxieties with friends, family, tutor, or a counselor can be very therapeutic.

· Study Groups: Sometimes studying in groups can reduce anxiety by providing mutual support.

Hope this helps! You've got this!

Amount to SUMthing is ELATED to feature our next “Student of the Quarter”: Abigail C.M. This is Abigail’s second time being featured. She is extremely well-deserving as she maintained her A average in Geometry all year long. She exemplifies the three C’s of Courage, Confidence, and Compassion. Abigail is a double threat as her dedication during tutoring sessions mirrors her determination in track and field. Kudos to her excellent and thorough tutor, Lila Li! We are PROUD to have Abigail as part of our ATS family!

Interview with Abigail:

1.) What’s your favorite use of math in real life?
Percentages have been the most useful thing in math that I use the most often especially with discount prices.

2) What have you enjoyed most about Amount to Sumthing this year?
One thing that I enjoyed the most about Amount to Sumthing this year was the bond and connection that I grew with my tutor.

3) What advice would you give to other students?
Some advice I would give to other students is that help isn’t a bad thing. Sometimes even the things we feel most confident on a little review is only going to help. One thing that noticed throughout this year was that me reviewing already learned material gave me new ways of approaching and applying myself to problems. By the time of exams/tests/quizzes I wasn’t afraid that my teacher was going to change wording because I knew I had multiple ways of applying my knowledge.

4.) How has ATS helped you to improve your COURAGE or CONFIDENCE?
ATS has improved my courage. It has improved my courage because it has given the bravery to apply myself to problems I wouldn’t have before even if it seems intimidating.
