We are proud to highlight three outstanding Emory University students who led the Economics Student Thesis Symposium on Intergenerational Mobility (IGM):

πŸ”· 4+1 Student, Gabriela Coada presenting her Master’s thesis to cap off her BA/MS degree
πŸ”· Fifth Year Ph.D Student, Ka Yan Cheng sharing her RA work on one of the only existing sources on bivariate distribution regressions with newly developed code
πŸ”· Undergraduate Econ/Math Double Major Student, Samuel (Nan) Jiang presenting his directed research regarding concordance dominance examination and tests

πŸ“Š With the mentorship of Professor Esfandiar Maasoumi, Coada, Yan, and Jiang are pushing the frontier of IGM research leading roundtable discussions regarding:

🟑 High-level synthesis of IGM literature across top 5 journals and leading scholars
🟑 Moving beyond regressions to uncover deeper insights with advanced methods
🟑 Shapley decomposition
🟑 Re-centered Influence Function (RIF) decomposition & analysis
🟑 Counterfactual analysis of racial & gender gaps using distributional extensions of Oaxaca–Blinder (rare, frontier work)
🟑 New bivariate Distribution Regressions (code by Ka Yan) + emerging entropy-based IGM measures
🟑 Copula-based approaches vs. traditional rank-rank regressions (challenging long-standing assumptions)
🟑 Concordance dominance tests (code by Samuel) β€” only the second application, first in IGM
🟑 Probability transition matrices & advanced mobility measures (including transition curves/functions)
🟑 Full replication on PSID panels to validate data and code robustness

β€œThese three presenters along with stunning widespread participation and inquiries by the student body were remarkable and deeply rewarding. The ability profiles and potential for high level absorption by these three scholars is another level!” - Professor Maasoumi

More Awards...πŸ† Jack and Lewis Greenhut Graduate Student Teaching Award

Our 2026 award recipient is Jafet Baca

Jafet Baca, a fourth-year doctoral candidate, served two consecutive fall semesters as the teaching assistant for Dr. Daniel Levy's Quantitative Methods 1 and 2, rigorous courses offered to first-year PhD students across Economics, the Business School, and the School of Public Health. Jafet has been exceptional in his role, functioning more as a co-teacher by diligently preparing and delivering new material during recitation meetings. In his nomination, Dr. Levy wrote, "He showed remarkable care for the students, which was very important given the pressure the students faced. The students valued his efforts and his teaching style very much, giving him high marks in teaching evaluations." Learn more about Jafet here: πŸ”— https://www.jbacaob.com/

This award showcases our department's commitment to those who not only have the skills to become excellent researchers, but also care about students and their learning experience.
