JUNE MEN’S HEALTH EVENT RECAP

Fedoras in the crowd, plenty of Knicks talk from the night before, and because June is Men’s Health Month, we welcomed Walter Falconer, MD, of Georgia Urology to speak on men’s health.

The topic drew a great turnout of 170 attendees, and Dr. Falconer received a well-deserved standing ovation after his engaging and informative talk. Key takeaways: get screened, see a urologist early, listen to your body, and make lifestyle adjustments, including hydrating smartly.

💊As always, thank you Drs. Vivian Liao and Kenric Ware, and the P4 pharmacist students from Mercer University College of Pharmacy for supporting our free medication reviews.

Since 2021, our Men’s Health Program has provided a space for men in metro Atlanta to connect, learn, and have real conversations about the health topics that matter most.

In May, we partnered with the Latin American Association - Asociación Latinoamericana to host a Memory Screening Day with their senior club. This event followed our screening event with the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Memory screenings were offered in Spanish and English to make sure that everyone felt comfortable, supported, and able to participate in their preferred language. By reducing language barriers, we can make care more accessible for all.

While they are not a diagnosis, these screenings can be a meaningful first step in deciding whether to follow up with a healthcare provider.

We are grateful to the individuals and organizations who helped make this event possible:
• Thomas Fuller and the Latin American Association older adult group
• Maria Fisburne – Center for Pan Asian Community Services
• Pamela Baretto – Grady Memorial Hospital and Georgia Memory Net
• The Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Outreach Team

MAY MEN’S HEALTH PROGRAM RECAP

May is Stroke Awareness Month, and we welcomed Fadi B. Nahab, MD, for a timely presentation on optimizing brain health through stroke prevention.

This topic hits close to home, literally. Georgia is in the “Stroke Belt,” meaning our region has higher stroke rates than the national average. That is why it matters to take early action and know the BE FAST stroke warning signs.

We also put tools in hands. Participants with high blood pressure received free blood pressure monitors to track their numbers at home.

In our community, we celebrate one another’s milestones. This month, we cheered on Julius Powell, our clinical research coordinator you see at every Men’s Health event, as he earned his Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and we sang happy birthday to Chef Jarvis.

At our recent event, we organized free memory screenings for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. The screenings can help detect possible changes in memory or thinking. While it is not a diagnosis, it can be a helpful first step in deciding whether to follow up with a provider.

We offered screenings in English, Korean, Mandarin and Vietnamese, so community members could participate and feel at ease in the language they are most comfortable using. Reducing language barriers is a key part of making care more accessible.

A big THANK YOU to the doctors, Emory University School of Medicine students, volunteers from the Center for Pan Asian Community Services, LifeCare Senior Center and the Emory Goizueta Brain Health Institute staff who made this event possible!

🧠 Celebrating 15 Years: HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 30TH BRAIN HEALTH FORUM

On April 28, the Goizueta Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center marked a milestone with the 30th Brain Health Forum. For 15 years, this event has helped bring cutting-edge brain health research closer to the public.

Researchers, caregivers, and community members gathered in person to learn, ask questions, and connect. This year’s focus was on preventing and predicting Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Experts shared insights on early detection tools, strategies for lifelong brain health, and what it means to be a Super Ager. The day also blended science with wellness through live Q&As and an energizing exercise session.

Thank you to everyone who made this moment possible. See you in October for the next event!
