For our 11th and final college tour before the May 1 National College Decision Day, we had the opportunity to take 26 students from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Gwinnett Technical College. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in automotive technology, gaming, cybersecurity, carpentry, HVAC, and other careers. This was a great opportunity for many of our students who have not selected a four-year college and are interested in either a trade school or a technical school. We are excited that many of them are going to choose this option and be able to earn certificates, diplomas, or associate’s degree, and enter the workforce. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.

We had the opportunity to take 40 students from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Georgia Gwinnett College. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in nursing, education, audio-visual technology, film, law and justice, and other careers. Many of our kids were excited about their associate’s degree or certificate Nexus programs that help them go straight from school into industry jobs. Georgia Gwinnett College is actually a very beautiful campus, and our kids really felt like it was close enough to home to be a good option for them. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.

Last week, we took 37 students from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Clayton State University, a hidden gem near our campus and a really good, affordable option for our students. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and many of them felt that it was a great option to continue their studies in cybersecurity, law, nursing, and dentistry and live on campus. This was a great opportunity for many of our students who have not selected a four-year college. We are excited that many of them are going to choose this option and be able to earn certificates, diplomas, or degrees, and enter the workforce. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.

We had the opportunity to take 50 students and chaperones from DeKalb High School of Technology South to Atlanta Technical College. These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. This was our 8th college or technical school tour this year. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in automotive and diesel technology, cosmetology, barbering, and other careers. This was a great opportunity for many of our students who have not selected a four-year college and are interested in either a trade school or a technical school. We are excited that many of them are going to choose this option and be able to earn certificates, diplomas, or associate’s degree, and enter the workforce. We have to keep presenting options to our students to give them choices when they graduate.

These students represented 13 different high schools in our district, and they were able to learn about careers that the school offered. Our students represented our school very well, and they were able to learn about careers in automotive technology, cosmetology, HVAC, law and justice, and other careers. This was a great opportunity for many of our students who have not selected a four-year college and are interested in either a trade school or a technical school. We are excited that many of them are going to choose this option and be able to earn certificates, diplomas, or associate’s degree, and enter the workforce. I enjoyed my experience as the editor of a new book by Val Daye entitled, The High-Performing Church: Five Strategies to Retain Members and Promote Future Growth. This book is tailored for leaders of high-performing churches who have a growth mindset. Her book is going to change how leaders in churches work to retain their members, and it will give them practical, hands-on strategies to grow their congregations. She was super pleasant and very easy to work with. I know she will be very successful with her book.

I was blessed to have my son, who is a freshman at Georgia Southern University, and one of my staff member’s son, who is a sophomore from Howard University, talk to about 550 high school seniors and juniors in different pathways about their experiences in college. They really gave the students some good advice about what to expect in college, what they should do to find their community and excel in their coursework, and how to transition seamlessly to the next chapter of their lives. It was so nice to see them guiding the next generation!
