After 30+ years in television and film…
I was asked to name my top 3 projects.

I only named 2. Greenleaf would definitely be the 3rd.

Now listen… as we say in the South,we’re gonna hold that against my head, not my heart 😂

But here’s the real lesson for makeup artists who want to work in TV & film:

Your career won’t be defined by one moment.

It’s built over time — project by project, set by set, lesson by lesson.

When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to focus on:• “What’s my big break?”• “What show will put me on?”

But in this industry, longevity matters more than hype.

The goal isn’t just to get on set…

It’s to stay working.

That comes from:• Consistency• Professionalism• Understanding how film & television really work.

After 30 years, your career becomes a body of work — not just a highlight reel.

And trust me… every set teaches you something.

One of the biggest misconceptions about film and television makeup is that it’s supposed to look like makeup.

It’s not.

It’s supposed to look like the character did it themselves.

That’s what makes it believable. That’s what makes it real.

This film was released back in 2008 and the makeup I did on Taraji worked because it was never about trends — it was about the character.

The makeup I did supported making Pam Evan's come to life in the movie The Family That Preys.

When you’re working in television and film, you’re not just applying makeup…

You’re helping build a world.

Every detail matters:• Who is this character?• What is their lifestyle?• How much time would they realistically spend getting ready?• What products would they actually use?

A clean, “no makeup” makeup look like this works because it supports the story not distracts from it.

That’s the difference between beauty makeup and film makeup.
Beauty makeup is about being seen.
TV & Film makeup is about being believed.

If the makeup looks too perfect, too polished, or too intentional…
You’ve broken the illusion.
And in TV & Film, the illusion is everything.

Save this if you’re serious about working in TV & film makeup 🎬

If you’re a new TV and Film Makeup Artist, one thing you want in your kit is palette paper.

On set, speed and organization are everything.

Palette paper keeps all your liquid and cream products in one place so when it’s time for actor touch-ups, you’re not digging through your kit, everything you need is right there in your actor's bag, ready to go.

This is one of those small things that makes a big difference when you’re working on a film set, a TV show, or any on-camera project. It helps you move faster, stay clean, and keep your actor looking consistent on camera.

Continuity and efficiency are the job.

In this video, I’m giving a quick overview of how I touch actors up on set and what I keep in my actor's bag to make touch-ups quick and easy during filming.

If you’re new to the industry or feel like you’re struggling with on-set touch-ups, this will help you a lot.

If you have questions about set etiquette, set bags, actor's bags, or touching up actors on set, leave them in the comments and I’ll answer them in future videos.

Most people think becoming a TV & film makeup artist is just about doing beautiful makeup.

The truth?

It’s about learning how to tell a story on camera.

Working in television and film requires a completely different skill set than traditional beauty makeup.

A professional film makeup artist must understand how to:

🎬 break down a character from the script🎬 maintain continuity across scenes and shooting days🎬 collaborate with directors, actors, and production teams🎬 use makeup to visually support the story being told on screen

For example…

If the script calls for a character who is sick, injured, or going through a major transformation, can you use makeup to help communicate that story on camera?

These are the kinds of skills that separate beauty makeup from television and film makeup artistry.

I had a great time discussing this on the I Do Film Podcast with
Thank you, Cardellia, for such a thoughtful conversation about the craft and the industry.
