“I don’t do drugs. I am drugs.”
— Salvador Dalí

A strange quote.

But it carries a powerful leadership insight.

Dalí believed the source of his creativity was within him, not something external.

Better-Self leaders operate the same way.

They don’t rely on titles.
They don’t rely on authority.
They don’t rely on motivational speeches.

They generate the energy themselves.

Their presence steadies a room.
Their curiosity unlocks better thinking.
Their self-awareness shapes the emotional climate.

They don’t bring leadership.

They are leadership.

The inner work always shows up in the outer world.

You can’t be your Better-Self by yourself.
But the journey always begins within.

What does excellence actually look like inside a restaurant?

On Tuesday more than 80 Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators gathered at the Piedmont Driving Club for a special luncheon with Horst Schulze, co-founder of The Ritz-Carlton.

What a tremendous time we shared together.

Horst reminded us that excellence does not sustain itself because it is declared. It is sustained when leaders define it clearly and teams take ownership of it every day.

Around the tables, operators shared real stories from their restaurants — moments where hospitality shows up when it matters most.

When teams regularly discuss what excellence looks like in their work, standards become shared understanding and leaders multiply.

Grateful to the operators who joined us and to Horst for reminding us that hospitality, practiced with intention, still changes everything.

Disruption isn’t the risk. Staying disrupted is.

Every leader experiences moments of frustration, uncertainty, and emotional activation. These moments are not the problem. They are part of leadership.

The risk emerges when awareness narrows and the leader remains inside the disruption. Perspective contracts. Reaction replaces intention. Rival-Self quietly takes the lead.

Grounded leaders experience disruption just like everyone else. What distinguishes them is their ability to recognize it and recover. They return to awareness. They reconnect to what is true. They choose their response rather than being driven by it.

Leadership implication
Leadership is not defined by avoiding disruption. It is defined by how quickly you recover and return to Better-Self.

Better-Self and Better-Together are not separate paths. They are the same path.

Better-Self leaders are more aware and grounded

The difference between Better-Self and Rival-Self leadership is not intelligence. It is awareness.

Better-Self leaders experience the same pressure, uncertainty, and emotional activation as everyone else. What distinguishes them is their ability to notice what is happening within them before reacting.

Awareness creates space. Space creates choice.

Grounded leaders recover faster. They return to clarity faster. They lead from intention rather than reaction.

Leadership implication
Leadership effectiveness is not determined by whether you become activated. It is determined by how quickly you return to awareness and grounded presence.

Better-Self and Better-Together are not separate paths. They are the same path.

The Paradox of Being Unaware of Our Unawareness 🔍
Ever thought about the things you don’t know you don’t know? The paradox is that we can be completely unaware of the areas in our lives where we lack awareness. This unawareness can be a roadblock, keeping us from seeing opportunities or improving as leaders.
One powerful way to overcome this paradox is by surrounding ourselves with trusted others who care enough to step in when they see us in a blind spot. These people—whether colleagues, mentors, or friends—are invaluable in initiating honest conversations that help us see what we might otherwise miss. Their feedback is crucial in revealing hidden areas for growth.
What’s one area in your life where you’ve discovered your own unawareness, and how did it change the way you lead or think?

Where Does True Influence Begin? 🌱
Have you ever thought about the unseen terrain within you, where your influence starts and the culture you create takes root? It’s easy to focus on external factors like strategy, goals, and results, but true transformation begins with self-awareness and inner work.
Navigating this internal terrain requires reflection, self-discovery, and an openness to growth. By doing this, we build the capacity to lead with authenticity and shape the cultures around us.
How do you navigate your own inner terrain, and what impact has it had on your leadership and the culture you cultivate?

The Art of Level 2 Listening: Seeing Beyond Words 👂
It’s easy to “listen,” but how often do we truly hear what’s being said? Level 2 Listening is the art of going beyond the words and tuning into the emotions, intentions, and underlying messages.
When we practice Level 2 Listening, we engage not just with our ears, but with our heart and mind. This deeper listening helps us understand the unspoken, build stronger connections, and respond with empathy. It’s a game-changer for leadership, enabling us to make better decisions, resolve conflicts more effectively, and create a culture of trust and collaboration.
Think about your conversations today: Are you listening beyond the words? What could shift if you practiced Level 2 Listening in every interaction?
What do you think is the hardest part about practicing Level 2 Listening, and how do you overcome that challenge?

How the Stories We Tell Ourselves Shape Our Attitude
Have you ever noticed how your attitude can shift based on the stories running in your mind? The way we view ourselves and the world often comes down to the narratives we tell ourselves.
When we tell a story of struggle, we often adopt a defensive, negative attitude. But when we reframe that story—viewing challenges as opportunities or setbacks as stepping stones—our attitude shifts, too.
Your story influences your mindset, and your mindset influences your actions. So, ask yourself: What story are you telling today, and how is it impacting your attitude?
Let’s start a conversation—what’s one story you’ve told yourself that’s changed your attitude for the better?

🎭 The Trouble with Deception? You Don’t Know It’s Happening.

That’s the insidious part. Deception hides. It doesn’t announce itself.

And it’s not just others who deceive us—our emotions can, too.

Most people haven’t been trained to name what they’re feeling in real time.
So when tension rises, they don’t recognize the fear underneath the frustration.
Or the shame underneath the anger.
Or the grief underneath the silence.

🧠 And when you can’t name it—you can’t tame it.
Instead, it drives your behavior from the backseat.

At Academy Within, we teach leaders that emotional intelligence starts with awareness.
Not control. Not suppression. Awareness.
Because clarity is the antidote to deception.

📌 Don’t let your emotions deceive you into becoming someone you’re not.

During the Aware module of Intrinsic Leadership Experience™, we use a science-based approach to help students become more emotionally aware—so they can lead from clarity, not confusion.

🗣 Have you ever looked back and realized your emotion had the wheel?
