On June 19, 1865, a full two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, freedom was given to enslaved citizens in Galveston, Texas.

The first Juneteenth (Freedom Day) was celebrated in 1866 by those brave, freed Black Texans. Even at the risk of their own safety, they celebrated.

History gives credit to General Granger for informing those Texans about the end of the civil war and their enslavement. But along with Granger’s 2,000 troops were 5,000 – 10,000 US Colored Troops (USCT). We will not forget them.

In remembrance and in honor of those upon whose shoulders we stand, Blue Level celebrates the 157th anniversary of Juneteenth on this federal observance of the holiday.

Santiago-Bond was born in the United States to Filipino parents. Her parents, who were in the United States to study, returned to the Philippines when Josephine was young, raising her and her sisters there. Josephine earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communications from the University of the Philippines and a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota State University. After a summer internship at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, she started working for NASA full-time in 2004. She contributed to the design of new technologies, space shuttle ground system operations, the Constellation subsystems design, and worked on several lunar missions. She currently serves as Chief of the Advanced Engineering Development Branch, managing a group of engineers across several disciplines.

Andrea Cruz Hernández is a military pilot from Mexico who became the first woman to be accepted into the Colegio del Aire. She made history when she became first woman to complete the Bachelor of Military Sciences Aviator Pilot from the University of the Mexican Army and Air Force. In 2009, she became the first woman to fly a Bonanza F33-C aircraft, registration EBA 64-31, alone with the badge of Venus. She was also the first woman to study a "military weapon" in a military campus. Before 2007, women in the Mexican armed forces could only apply for nursing, dentistry, or medicine specialties.

Holi is a religious festival celebrated by Hindu people worldwide. It is a fiesta of colors and a feast of sweets, usually marking the welcoming of Spring. On the eve of Holi, a Holika bonfire is lit as a reminder of the victory of good over evil. On this day, people bid goodbye to their problems and animosities. Some say that by applying gulaal on each other's faces even the biggest enemies and foes turn into friends on this blessed day. Hence, the celebration and tradition is called 'Holi Milan'.

Dialla Diarra is a community mediator who was nominated in 2018 for the Oxfam Intermón Avanzadoras award in Spain, which aims to make visible women who build a fairer and more equal world today. She chairs the Legki Yakaru association for sub-Saharan women working with the African community, training girls and women, empowering them, and fighting against those practices that violate their rights. Through the HEAL project, it is intended, among other things, to openly address issues that are considered “taboo”, such as sexuality and health.

Zaila Avant-garde is a multi-talented powerhouse with success springing from her endeavors--and all before the ninth grade. She was recently named Sports Illustrated's Kid of the Year 2021. Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, she won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, making her the first Black American to win in almost 100 years of the competition. Avant-garde landed on her winning word, murraya –a type of tree –by associating the word with famous comedian Bill Murray, who surprised her by phoning in during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Along with competing in spelling bees, Avant-garde holds three Guinness World Records for her basketball prowess. Avant-garde aspires to one day play basketball at Harvard before a career at NASA or in the NBA.

Guion "Guy" Bluford was the first Black American launched into space. He received an undergraduate degree in aerospace engineering from Pennsylvania State University. Bluford was commissioned as an Officer in the U.S. Air Force where he trained as a fighter pilot. He flew 144 combat missions during the Vietnam War. In 1978, she earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Bluford was one of 35 individuals selected in 1978 from 10,000 applicants in NASA's first competition to become space shuttle astronauts. In 1983, he rode into Earth orbit on the shuttle orbiter Challenger, returning to Earth a week later. His final mission was in 1992 on the shuttle Discovery where he served as mission specialist and spent more than 28 days in space. He left NASA in 1993 for a private-sector career in information technology and engineering services.

An intense curiosity and brilliance with numbers vaulted Katherine Johnson ahead several grades in school. At age 18, she enrolled in the historically black West Virginia State College where she was mentored by a professor with a PhD in mathematics. In 1939, she became one of three Black students to integrate West Virginia University by enrolling in its graduate math program. In 1962, as NASA prepared for the orbital mission of John Glenn, Johnson was called upon to run the numbers that were programmed into the computer by hand. Glenn's flight was a success and marked a turning point in U.S. space exploration history. At age 97, Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent. In 1926, the group sponsored a Black History Week, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs, and host performances and lectures.

In the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Black History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity, the celebration and name evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout [American] history.”

The Black History Month 2022 theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” explores the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing throughout the African Diaspora. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

The Founder and CEO of Blue Level Training, Karine Bah Tahé, will discuss the following:

During the less than 13 years of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s leadership of the modern American Civil Rights Movement, from December 1955 until April 4, 1968, African American people achieved more genuine progress toward racial equality in America than the previous 350 years had produced.

Dr. King is widely regarded as America’s pre-eminent advocate of nonviolence and one of the greatest nonviolent leaders in world history.

Drawing inspiration from both his Christian faith and the peaceful teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. King led a nonviolent movement in the late 1950s and ‘60s to achieve legal equality for African-Americans in the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr. used the power of words and acts of nonviolent resistance, such as protests, grassroots organizing, and civil disobedience to achieve seemingly-impossible goals.

He went on to lead similar campaigns against poverty and international conflict, always maintaining fidelity to his principles that men and women everywhere, regardless of color or creed, are equal members of the human family.

Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Nobel Peace Prize lecture and “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” are among the most revered orations and writings in the English language. His accomplishments are now taught to American children of all races, and his teachings are studied by scholars and students worldwide. He is the only non-president to have a national holiday dedicated in his honor and is the only non-president memorialized on the National Mall in Washington D.C. He is memorialized in hundreds of statues, parks, streets, squares, churches and other public facilities around the world as a leader whose teachings are increasingly-relevant to the progress of humankind.
