Schoolhouse Chicks of Frederick County Maryland

Schoolhouse Chicks of Frederick County Maryland Schoolhouse Chicks is an agricultural education program available to all public, private and preschool children throughout Frederick County.

Chick hatching in classrooms across Frederick County is what we do! Our goal is to prompt a life-long love and knowledge of nature and agricultural through the fun and exciting experience of hatching baby chicks. We visit each classroom three times. Children learn about the history of chickens in the US, various chicken breeds, embryo development and how to nurture and care for baby chicks.

:( Sad day for Schoolhouse Chicks.

We're working on a pictorial flock for The Great Frederick Fair. Detail to come....

The Great Frederick Fair announced Saturday that chickens, and yes, even those baby ducklings sliding down tiny slides, will not be allowed on the fairgrounds this September.

Just out....from our friends at The Great Frederick Fair.

Due to avian influenza concerns, "Maryland will ban poultry exhibition after August 25". This means no poultry at fall fairs in Maryland :(

Schoolhouse Chicks is working on a pictorial display of classroom chicks from spring hatchings in classrooms. I'll keep everyone posted.

Look for an article in FNP soon.

Ever wonder what happens to your classroom chicks when they leave the classroom?

Well, most breeders in our program raise heritage and show breed chickens. This means that the chickens they raise are not solely for meat or laying purposes. Instead, they raise chickens of a breed they love to ensure the continuation of the breed and all its beauty.

So where do the chicks go? Back to the farm and the farmer from where the eggs came!

Most of our farmers sell some of their chicks to other breeders, farmers and budding backyard farmers, while the rest are kept to replenish their current breeding flock.

It's a win-win-win for everyone involved!
