Kindergarteners at San Benito Elementary Learn what soil is made of and how important soil is for plants. They interacted with 3 main types of soil (sand, silt, and clay) and got to shake up a soil “smoothie” (AKA soil jar test) with a sample of dirt from their school garden to investigate what kind of soil we have.

We are fortunate that we live in California where gardens are abundant. Our students can enjoy learning about gardening on their own campus in outdoor classrooms. People in other parts of the country must find creative ways to connect people with nature. Check out the video below for more....

Tom and the teachers. Principal Kat and husband Bill hosted a work day for the Outdoor Classroom. Bill supplied a truck load of planter mix and then ended up wheelbarrowing most of it into the new row crop area. A partial donation was made by Minor's Hardware for retaining blocks along the back of the sidewalk. One Cool Earth and the Multiflora Club provided lots of plants and labor.
It was a very successful morning for the garden. Everybody worked very hard.

Mr. Ed Surman had been hired by the district to be the garden coordinator for San Benito, San Gabriel and Monterey elementary schools. He will tackle the irrigation system here next Monday. In the middle is Mr. Tom and on the right is Mr. Greg of One Cool Earth.
