It's not quite Christmas time, but we're always in the mood for A Christmas Carol! RMC Theatre invites everyone to audition for our beloved annual tradition of A Christmas Carol!

We will be holding auditions on:
October 16th at 6pm
October 18th at 4pm
We will hold callbacks and auditions for anyone who had missed the previous two auditions on October 20th at 6pm.
All auditions will be held in the Cobb-Kesler Theater in the center for the performing arts on the Randolph Macon campus.

If you plan to audition, please also plan to attend our first read through on Friday, October 23rd at 7pm.

Our performance dates are scheduled for December 9th through the 13th.

We welcome everyone to audition! If you've never done theatre before, audition!! If you've been doing theatre your whole life, audition!! A Christmas Carol is a beloved tradition because it brings everyone together to tell a story that is hard not to love. We need YOU to help us tell that story.

We would not have this beautiful story to tell on our stage without the people that brought it to life in the first place, Joe and Marilyn Mattys. We are eternally grateful for them.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding auditions, the show, or anything else, please reach out to the stage manager:

We are grieved to share the passing of our former RMC Theatre professor, Joe Mattys.

Joe was a longtime theatre artist and educator who had a tremendous impact on the communities he surrounded himself with. He was much more than an outstanding teacher and director. Joe was a beloved father, grandfather, colleague and friend.

Our theatre program wouldn’t be what it is today without all of the hard work Joe put into it. When he accepted the position as the new Director of Theatre in 1990, the theatre major was not yet a thing. Over his 25 years at RMC, Joe grew the program into its own degree by adding more courses and cultivating an inclusive community of theatre lovers.

Anyone who knows Joe, knows A Christmas Carol. The production is the well known Charles Dickens classic, adapted for the stage by Marilyn Mattys, Joe’s late wife. A Christmas Carol became a beloved annual tradition throughout the Randolph Macon and Ashland communities. Joe directed the show every year from 1990 to 2015, and he retired from being a full time professor in 2014. A Christmas Carol had a triumphant return in December of 2024 and 2025 with Joe invited back as the director. The show was able to be shared again with new and returning audiences, touching the hearts of all who experienced it. This beloved tradition would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of Joe and Marilyn Mattys. Both of their legacies will live on in this story.

If you wish to read more about Joe’s extraordinary life, you can read his obituary linked here. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Theatre Program at Randolph-Macon or to CJ's Thumbs Up Foundation.
