Most organizations that come to me with a training problem don't actually have a training problem.
They have a systems problem they've been solving with content.
Nearly 300 assets. No learning paths. No personas. No competency framework. Five years of declining engagement.
We didn't build a single new course. We rebuilt the system around what already existed.
Engagement recovered. Not because the content changed — because learners could finally find what they needed and understand why it mattered.
The full story is in this week's newsletter. Link below!

Most organizations think they have a “learner journey.”

What they actually have is a sequence of courses.

That distinction matters more than it sounds.

In this week’s newsletter, I unpack why journey mapping—when done correctly—is not a curriculum exercise, but a diagnostic tool. It shows you where your learning system actually works… and where it breaks down.

More importantly, it gives you a way to design something that holds up under real conditions—real learners, real constraints, real business pressure.

If you’re building, scaling, or rethinking a training function, this is the work that needs to happen before another course gets built. Read out latest newsletter post below.

Most learning initiatives fail not because the content is bad, but because the problem was never clearly defined.

Before designing anything, ask:
✓ What behavior change is needed?
✓ Who is the actual learner?
✓ What barriers exist in the work environment?
✓ What does success look like to the business?

A quick discovery phase (even 2–4 weeks) can prevent months of wasted development and low impact.

If you want to design learning that actually moves the needle, start with diagnosis, not delivery.

A client recently asked for help building a new B2C learning product after multiple failed attempts to scale it.

Instead of jumping into design, we spent 30 days in a discovery phase using a triangulated mixed-methods research process. We collected insights from internal stakeholders, practitioners, and end users to understand:

• the real pain points
• who the customer is
• what the product must do to succeed

The result was a clear, evidence-based direction, and 360° visibility into the current state of their business.

If you want clarity before you build, this is the difference between guessing and knowing.

I’m honored to be the keynote speaker at the Innovative Educators Summit, hosted by Hawkes Learning.

My talk, “The Space Between Us: How Community Transforms Learning,” focuses on a simple but often overlooked truth:

Learning is not just an individual activity, it happens inside communities.

Community shapes:
☞ belonging and student identity
☞ academic courage and risk-taking
☞ persistence and confidence
☞ the conditions that make learning possible at scale

If you’re an educator who values meaningful learning environments, where students feel seen, supported, and capable, this summit is built for you.

Most L&D decisions aren’t made because there’s perfect information.
They’re made because something has to move.

A new platform.
A rushed training request.
A mandate tied to performance, compliance, or growth.

What often gets overlooked is the quality of the inputs driving those decisions.

When learning leaders are forced to act with:
• incomplete data
• conflicting stakeholder expectations
• unclear success measures
• pressure to move fast

The risk isn’t slow progress, it’s misaligned investment.

Strong learning strategy isn’t about reacting faster.
It’s about creating enough clarity to decide well.

This is the work behind sustainable learning decisions, especially when the cost of getting it wrong is high.

Last day to join Cohort 2.
Here's the core insight from Cohort 1:

You probably already see the real problem. This course teaches you how to make leadership care.
If that resonates, join us.

Two days to join Cohort 2.
If you're on the fence, consider this:
One Cohort 1 participant realized halfway through that the stakeholder they'd been relying on to advocate for their project had lost interest months ago. A year of work was already dead—they just hadn't seen it yet.

They can't get that year back. But they won't make that mistake again.
The frameworks in this course don't guarantee success. They help you see the landscape clearly before you're too invested to change course.
That's worth something.

A common pattern I see in L&D is that organizations begin design before they’ve truly understood the problem.

They start with a request, then build a course, then measure completion, and then wonder why performance didn’t change.

This is why the discovery phase matters.

When we skip discovery, we build on assumptions:
☞ Who the learner really is
☞ What the real performance gap is
☞ What constraints exist in the work environment
☞ What the system will actually support

Our process starts differently. We use triangulated data from internal stakeholders, practitioners, and end users to understand the system before design begins.

This reduces risk and leads to learning products that are grounded in real needs, not guesses.

Enrollment closes soon! In this course you will:

→ Audit a real situation using the four-layer framework (Infrastructure, Culture, Business Alignment, Sustainability)
→ Map your stakeholders and identify where you're under-engaged
→ Reframe an L&D problem in business language
→ Build a pilot plan with scope protection built in
→ Identify measurement strategies that maintain executive attention
This isn't theory. It's application to your actual work.
By the end, you'll have frameworks you can use immediately—and a different way of thinking about your role.
