Nice fall day treating eastern hemlocks for Gateway Mountain Preserve in Old Fort, NC. Our fourth hemlock woolly adelgid treatment since 2007. But of a rough start but still I hit close to 200 trees in a 5 hour session. Two other applicators to tally…

Get ‘er done!!!

We spent three rewarding days on the Appalachian Trail treating ash for emerald ash borer in GA and TN. Sadly, quite a few bigger ash were flattened by hurricane Helene.

Lots of hiking, stinging nettle, and poison ivy but a truly worthwhile project. We have been working on some of these sites for over ten years via the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.

Three weeks after Helene.

Our truck finally runs!

We salvaged all the saws and shears!

The dump trailer works!

Still have no office, email has gone down weirdly, and no landline or internet.

Well folks, we’re pretty messed up. Office space had 5.5 feet of water, and equipment left there is certainly destroyed. Same for truck and chipper.

Jason and I will assess as the water recedes and come up with a plan moving forward.

This will be a major blow, and force some decisions.

Nice change of pace but physically challenging (excruciating) two days pruning heritage apples on the Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain, TN.

Many thanks to Matt Drury of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy for connecting us with this opportunity and putting us up in a sweet bed and breakfast!

I think large-scale hemlock preservation projects are one of the most rewarding things we do. I love this shot of Jason treating hemlocks in Fiery Gizzard, part of Grundy Forest State Natural Area, Tracy City TN. In this project we treated over 7,800 trees on 1,860 acres.

Saved some trees today! Root pruning of over-mulched maples. Also investigated a large eastern hemlock for root issues. The Airspade is such a great tool!

If you only make one cut- make it count! Removing the parallel codominant lead on this young ginkgo saved it from numerous structural defects and likely stem failure.

Structural pruning when trees are getting established is essential for the best possible development of the mature plant. The most significant impacts can often be done with simple hand tools in a matter of seconds. Sadly, these formative opportunities are rarely taken.

Some rewarding work this week- saving fine ash and improving stunning views... Nice beast of a shingle oak to admire as well.

YES! And save your own ash as well.

Join me in helping to save Pisgah's Ash Trees. The emerald ash borer (EAB) – a small, metallic-green beetle from the Eurasian – is destroying Pisgah's ash tree populations. If we act now, we can save Pisgah's ash trees for future generations and our native habitat.
