This week, the 4th and 5th grade Reading AIG students at Trinity Elementary jumped into a “Curiosity to Headline” research task—and they were hooked right away!

We started with some mystery photos from the 1997 Lego Ocean Disaster to spark their curiosity, and from there, students went on a scavenger hunt to figure out the story behind it and uncover the “headline.” They researched, world collaboratively, and then shared their findings with their groups.
The creativity was so fun to see—students created newspaper reports, animated Google Slide presentations, and even podcasts to tell the story! Such a great mix of research, creativity, and confidence.

Photo 1: Strategic Minds at Work. Before the final bell rang for Spring Break, our third and fourth-grade students turned a short school day into a high-stakes arena of logic. In this snapshot, you can see the intense focus as students engage with the game Blokus. Far beyond a simple pastime, these young learners are actively applying mathematical vocabulary—discussing spatial orientation, symmetry, and area—while sharpening the critical thinking skills necessary to outmaneuver their opponents. It’s a masterclass in strategy disguised as play.

Photo 2: The Art of Pattern Recognition. The classroom buzzed with academic excitement as students took on the challenge of Set. This image captures the moment a student identifies a hidden connection, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the traits and characteristics of shapes. By analyzing colors, shadings, and symbols, these Randleman scholars are strengthening their visual-spatial intelligence and demonstrating that deep, analytical thinking is the best way to kick off the holiday.

Photo 3: Collaboration and Cognitive Growth. Growth doesn’t take a day off! This photo showcases the collaborative spirit of our elementary learners as they bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world application. Whether calculating their next move in Blokus or categorizing complex images in Set, these students utilized their final hours before break to strengthen their mental agility. We are incredibly proud of their dedication to mastering strategy and critical thinking, ensuring they head into Spring Break with sharp minds and inspired spirits.

The 5th grade AIG students at Farmer Elementary used Depth and Complexity strategies to analyze “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “The Three Little Pigs” through multiple points of view and close character analysis. Students examined the motivations, actions, and perspectives of key characters while discussing how different viewpoints can change the way a story is understood. To deepen their thinking, students participated in a mock trial where they used evidence from the texts to defend and challenge the characters’ decisions, demonstrating strong critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills.
