Established in February 2003 in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. National History
Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc. Congress, U.S. Air Force, U.S.
is a Latina-based sorority devoted to serving our community while fostering a sense of pride and respect in our heritage. The sorority was founded on September 29, 1990, by thirteen inspiring young women from four different schools in the state of New York: SUNY Albany, SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY New Paltz, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Our founding mothers are: Dora Maria Abreu, Elizabeth Coa
ts, Tina Colberg, Eulogia Diaz, Angelica Hernandez, Teresa Herrero, Norma Porras, Miriam Ramirez, Saida Rodriguez, Grecia Sanchez, Maria Trujillo, Clara Vasquez and Dulce Williams. This diverse group of women came together with the goal of creating an organization that would help their communities, unite women and promote scholarship. Since its inception in 1990, our organization has expanded outside of the State of New York and has chartered chapters in the states of New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Texas and California. We dedicate ourselves to service, academic excellence and professional development. Gamma Alpha Chapter History
The Gamma Alpha chapter, founded in 2003, as the first graduate chapter of the sorority, is determined to continue its efforts in uplifting our surrounding communities and serve as model of excellence in the DMV area. Today, there are nearly 160 Hermanas throughout the region, that include women from all over the country. The Mid-Atlantic Region's professional sisters are diverse and successful, whose expertise range from government to non-profit work, higher education to business professionals. Professional affiliations include: U.S. Army, National Council of La Raza, American Kidney Fund, and SHW Group. Current undergraduate Hermanas are both scholars and leaders in their community, while managing their undergraduate chapters, setting example for their fellow students and following their high bar set forth by their alumnae Hermanas.

This National Nurse Day, we celebrate our Hermanas in nursing across the region and the care, strength, and heart you give so selflessly. 🩺🌹
Whether it’s a long shift, a quiet moment of reassurance, or standing strong in the face of uncertainty, you lead with compassion and resilience. Your influence extends far beyond the bedside.
Fun fact: Per the American Heart Association (AHA), “Titi Me Preguntó” matches the tempo recommended for hands-only, life-saving CPR (107 bpm)! ❤️🏥

Join us in giving back through our Pet Supplies Drive benefiting the Prince George’s County Pet Unity Project and fur babies in the ACRT network! 🐾❤️💛💙🐾
Unfortunately, due to the deportation of some of our community members, beloved pets have been left behind and need immediate care. We are asking for your collaboration with supplies so we can support them now and prepare them for their forever homes. We have included some of the fur babies under these circumstances in the pictures to follow.
From April 30th - May 30th you can donate pet food, toys, blankets, cleaning supplies, treats, leashes, and more by purchasing directly through our Amazon wish list link in bio or QR code on the flyer. 🐶🐱
Every contribution, big or small, helps provide comfort, care, and love to animals in need. 🦄

In honor of crossover in Annapolis on Monday, we highlight the advocacy work our Hermanas have done this legislative session in the artistic word salad demonstrated above.
The Solidaridad Action Committee hosted our 2nd annual lobby night this year in collaboration with Progressive Maryland. Due to the inclement weather, the lobby night was transformed into a virtual experience where Maryland Hermanas were able to meet with legislators from their districts about immigration, education, healthcare, housing and environmental justice issues.
Some special highlights from Lobby night include Tamara Zuniga, H. Temazcal emceeing the rally, and Yakie Palma, H. Acatl delivering a speech during the rally.
In addition to Lobby Night, Hermanas have been actively engaging in advocacy efforts in Annapolis and at the local council level over the past few months, supporting our communities on several fronts. In the videos, Tamara Zuniga provides testimony in support of immigrant justice, Allison Yunda, H. Securus, advocates for raising the minimum wage for domestic care workers, and Erica Puentes, H. Qikyusisa testifies in support of healthcare justice.
Stephanie Lemus-Ortiz, H. Paradigma, participated in School Counselor Legislative Day held at the General Assembly in Richmond, VA on February 4th. She met with her delegate to lobby for support of bills that would help strengthen the profession.
These are just a few examples of the advocacy our sisters engage in!
