This lawsuit over religious education is really about race A federal appeals court heard oral arguments on Tuesday in a case that tests the boundaries of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that established a legal exemption for religious institutions to discriminate in certain circumstances and for faith-based reasons.

Colorado Christian school seeking broad 'ministerial exception' from 10th Circuit A U.S. appeals court panel on Tuesday will take up the latest high-profile case to test the limits of an exemption from anti-discrimination laws for religious schools, with a Colorado Christian academy claiming it should apply broadly to "teachers, chaplains and other leaders."

“Tucker organized an anti-racism assembly for the school. After the assembly, a group of parents complained to the school administration, claiming their children—including those who had openly expressed neo-Nazi sympathies—were “harmed” by the assembly. FCA blamed Tucker, demoted him, and fired him soon after.

When Tucker filed a civil rights lawsuit against FCA—because it is illegal to fire your employees in retaliation for opposing racial discrimination—the school claimed that his suit was barred because he was a “minister.” Fortunately, the district court did not agree and said that his civil rights claims could go forward. But now the school is appealing that to the 10th Circuit.”

3 years ago, in January, February and March, in the wake of Faith Christian Academy Leadership and School Board trying to sweep the impact of racism at the school under the rug, dozens of students, alumni and their families began sharing their experiences at Faith Christian Academy (Arvada, CO). To every student and parent who has shared their experiences of racism, sexism, homophobia and other abuses at Faith Christian Academy, you are believed and you are valued. Thank you for your courage in sharing. You are not forgotten. You matter.

Being unsupported and unprotected by faculty and administration at Faith Christian is a consistent theme in the statements from marginalized students.

Racism. Homophobia. Sexism. Bigoted and harmful views, words and world-views shape and impact our students.

What does it TEACH students when educators and administrators are silent in the face of racism, homophobia and sexism? What does it TEACH students when educators and administrators are participating in racism, homophobia and sexism?

We have not forgotten about the students, alumni and families impacted by racism at Faith Christian Academy-Arvada, CO.
