Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, 72 law enforcement officers gave their lives in the line of duty responding to the attacks in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

They ran toward danger to save others, alongside firefighters, paramedics, and countless civilians who did the same. Their sacrifice remains one of the greatest single-day losses in the history of American law enforcement.

Today, on this 25th anniversary, we remember them. We remember the agencies and families who carried that loss forward, and the generation of officers who have served since, shaped in part by the lessons and the resolve that came out of that day.

To every officer who responded on September 11, 2001, and to the families who lost someone that day: we honor you, and we will not forget.

Yesterday, Dr. Ryan Fisher presented interim findings from BTSCRP Project BTS-41, "Roadmap for the Future Role of Law Enforcement Personnel to Enforce Traffic Safety Laws," to the project's review panel at the National Academies' Keck Center in Washington, DC. The project, funded through the Behavioral Traffic Safety Cooperative Research Program and administered by the Transportation Research Board, is developing evidence-based guidance to help agencies navigate the future of traffic safety enforcement.

Phase I brought together five streams of evidence, a national survey, focus groups with practitioners and community stakeholders, a review of enforcement policies across dozens of jurisdictions, a synthesis of the research literature, and an analysis of enforcement and crash trends, to understand where traffic enforcement stands and where it's headed. The panel approved the project to move forward into Phase II, where NPI will build roadmap itself.
