Understanding Accommodations and Modifications | Texas SPED Support 05/26/2026

‘Accommodations’ and ‘modifications’ are often used interchangeably in ARD/IEP meetings — but they are actually very different supports.

A helpful new TEA resource breaks down:
• what accommodations are
• what modifications are
• examples of each
• how they impact classroom expectations and access to learning

In simple terms:
Accommodations change HOW a student learns.
Modifications change WHAT a student is expected to learn.

This distinction can matter for instruction, grading, and long-term academic planning, so it’s an important topic for families and educators to understand together.

Helpful resource for Texas parents, educators, and ARD committee members.

Understanding Accommodations and Modifications | Texas SPED Support Provides a foundational understanding of the difference between and examples of accommodations and modifications.

📝 End of Year Parent Reminder

If your child has an IEP, 504 Plan, evaluation/FIE, or receives special education services and you are moving schools or districts, make sure you keep copies of all important educational paperwork for your records.

Helpful documents to save:
📝Current IEP or 504 Plan
📝Most recent evaluation/FIE
📝Progress reports
📝Behavior plans/support plans
📝Accommodation information
📝Any ARD/504 paperwork

It can also be helpful to hand deliver or email copies directly to the new school once enrollment is completed. Sometimes record transfers between schools and districts can take time (SOMETIMES MONTHS!). Providing copies yourself can help ensure your child’s services, supports, and accommodations are reviewed and implemented as quickly as possible while records are being transferred and reviewed.

Also, when enrolling at a new school, many districts ask whether your child currently receives special education or 504 services. Make sure you check✔️ those boxes so the school knows to request the appropriate records and supports.

📒 Keeping your own educational binder or digital folder can make transitions much smoother for families.

💗 Parent Reminder 💗

It is okay to ask questions during an ARD (Annual, Review, Dismissal) / IEP (Individualized Education Program) meeting.

You do not have to understand every educational term, evaluation score, accommodation, or service immediately during the meeting. ARDs can feel overwhelming, especially when teams are discussing data, timelines, goals, and supports all at once.

Some helpful questions parents can ask during meetings:
• Can you explain that in simpler terms?
• How will this support help my child in the classroom?
• Can I have a copy of that data/report?
• What does this look like day-to-day at school?
• Can we revisit this concern later in the meeting?

You are an important part of the ARD committee, and your questions and input matter

💗 Parents: What is one thing you wish someone had explained to you before your first ARD/IEP meeting?

The Parent ARD Playbook (A Parent-Friendly Guide to Texas ARD & IEP Meetings) 05/11/2026

Hi everyone! I’m Chelsea, and welcome to SPED Documentation Studio 💗

I’m excited (and honestly a little nervous 😅) to finally share something I’ve been working on.

As someone who works in special education, I know how overwhelming ARDs, IEPs, evaluations, accommodations, and all the educational terminology can feel for families. Parents are expected to make important decisions for their child while often trying to learn an entirely new language at the same time.

I created The Parent ARD Playbook to help make the process feel less intimidating and more understandable for families navigating special education services in Texas.

This guide was designed to:
💗 Explain ARDs and IEPs in parent-friendly language
💗 Help parents feel more prepared and confident in meetings
💗 Provide helpful tips, explanations, and resources
💗 Support collaboration between families and schools

My hope is that parents walk away feeling empowered, informed, and supported — because no parent should feel lost sitting at the ARD table.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to share this resource and take this first step 💗

Available now on Teachers Pay Teachers:

💗 Once purchased, all future updates to the guide will be free.

💗 I would also truly love parent feedback, suggestions, or ideas for helpful resources/topics to add in future updates. My hope is for this to continue growing into a supportive and practical resource for families navigating the ARD process together.
