Two Steps Forward and Three Steps Back
The last week of August, I woke up one morning with a kink on the right side my neck. You know, the kind you get when you sleep in a weird position and it feels kind of stiff for a day or two? It felt like that except it didn't go away. After various home remedies, a Swedish massage, and a session o...

Maybe it's because tailgating season is here, but I've been thinking a lot about coolers.
A client shared during a recent coaching session how she discerns decisions around boundaries in terms of coolers: does this situation require a hard cooler that's solid and unyielding or does it call for a soft cooler that is malleable and a little bit mushy? I love learning new tools from my clients!
I connected with this imagery immediately and decided to apply this framework to boundaries around my time. The summer was packed with travel and wonky camp schedules and I quickly realized that something needed to give. I noticed that the open space on my calendar that I had blocked off every other Friday for writing, planning, and self-care was actually creating more stress than solace. I decided that that boundary belonged in a soft cooler for the time being, whereas my boxing class went into the hard cooler as a non-negotiable component of my physical and mental health.
As we head into the last few months of 2024, this is a great time to consider what you want to put into each cooler to help prioritize your time and energy.

🇮🇹 My husband and I traveled to Italy this summer for vacation and our first stop was Rome. Even before we landed, we found ourselves saying things like:
“Do you think you’ll want to do a tour of the Colosseum?”
“When in Rome!”
And then it continued for four days straight.
“Do you want to grab some gelato?”
“When in Rome!”
"I'm in the mood for pasta. What about you?"
"When in Rome!"
It. Never. Got. Old.
However, as we departed for Naples, I started to think about what the full phrase, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” really means...

Sure, as a birthing parent, I did have 40 weeks of pregnancy to wrap my head around the idea that, if everything went according to plan, something the size of a poppyseed would grow into a watermelon that would someday call me Mommy, but nothing about being pregnant actually prepared me for motherhood. Aside from reducing my sushi and alcohol intake, I was still doing all of the same things I was doing before; I just had to p*e more often.
Becoming a parent hit me, well, like a mother...
Like a Mother
I thought the hardest part after giving birth would be getting back into my skinny jeans.

🍁 I often find myself restless and unsettled as the summer fades into fall.
🍁 I feel the anticipation of a new school year with its smell of freshly sharpened pencils and crisp textbooks. I am energized by the promise of blank notebooks and the hope of white sneakers before they are broken in. New teachers, new friends, new schedules, new activities. So much potential for what is yet to come.

We were having a tricky morning.
My husband was away on a work trip so I was navigating the morning chaos to get the kids dressed, fed, packed, brushed, shoed, and at school on time on my own. Micah (6) had woken up late, which meant even less time to get all of those must-dos done, and was even more whiny than usual. His cereal bar broke in two coming out of the package and he became a puddle of tears.
In addition to trying to convince him that it would taste exactly the same while simultaneously attempting to smush the apple bar back together, I was using all (two) of my good parenting strategies to help him self-regulate and calm his body by taking deep breaths. We were doing one we call “the flower and the rocket” where I hold my fist up pretending I have a bouquet of flowers for him to smell and then hold up my index finder that magically turns into a rocket that he has to “launch” by blowing really hard. The rocket doesn’t go very high or far at first so he’s motivated to push it higher by taking even bigger inhales and even bigger exhales. By the third breath, he’s usually smiling and laughing, and we’re back to equilibrium by the fifth.

I've written about my running journey over the years. I've shared how revelatory it was for me to run while feeling wholly aligned and integrated in mind, body, and spirit. I've expressed how meaningful it is when I feel like I'm running for a deeper, greater purpose, and to receive signs from the universe that confirm that I am exactly where I am meant to be.

I have facilitated a number of retreats over the past two years. This was different.
This was not a work team looking to connect for a few hours around a specific issue. This was not a nonprofit board convening to talk about strategy or vision. This was eight women coming to an understated Air B&B in the beautiful Hudson Valley for a day and a half without really having a clear idea of what they had signed themselves up for, but trusting that it was going to be exactly what they needed.
