We’ll see how long he keeps this one! He goes back and forth a bit between the orange and the brown shells. He’s a purple pincher hermit crab, so his favorite shells are turbos. Over the years we’ve learned that he prefers the hefty ones over any that are thinner or lighter. He wants to be able to bonk around in his tank with maximum noisiness. 😆

It’s finally time! The apples on our tree are ready to pick. The children learned how to twist the apples so they come off easily, which is a good thing, because we still have so many left on the tree!

We don’t use any pesticides on the playground, so the apples are always fair game for critters to snack on, and live in…so we recommend giving them a good scrub and then cutting them in half instead of just taking a bite. 😅🍎

Since the trees nearby were taken down, the groundhog seems to have decided that the playground is the safest place to hang around. Actually, we think it’s pretty safe, too! But we didn’t design it for groundhogs.

The knobbed cylinders are a self-correcting material. The child can see when one is too short or too tall, too wide or too narrow. The language for these characteristics is also taught when the child has worked with the knobbed cylinders enough to feel competent, so they can describe what is or isn’t working.

This little one did find all the places for every cylinder, and was proud of herself! 💕

This activity is also very useful for movements where a child is getting used to crossing the midline, or strengthening their ability to use one side of their body to reach across to the other side. This is a skill that is important to develop for hand-eye coordination for many daily activities, as well as reading and writing.

How’s that for an original song? 💕

The buttons are a type of grouping work. We sort them by color, shape, size…but also explore what it looks like to have one big group, or two little groups. How many buttons can we add before a little group becomes big? How many groups can we make? Once the children get started, they have a lot of ideas.

This work is a lesson in three-dimensional shape names and properties. Many children start out trying to call a cone a triangle, or maybe it’s a circle (because it has a circle on the base). They work with these items to learn their proper names, and explore to see what they can do. How many have a shape in common? Squares and rectangles can be found on many 3D shapes. How many can roll? How many cannot stack? If they’re feeling like they want a challenge, we introduce the blindfold and let them identify each piece only by touching them!

Once they learn more about this work, the children start to see these shapes in everything around them. We roll the rug into a cylinder! The globe is a sphere! Woody’s tank is a rectangular prism! Their enthusiasm spreads. 💕

Woody is upside-down and making that terrible nails-on the-chalkboard noise. Does he not smell his dinner waiting for him? Maybe he’s over krill. Better to be upside-down in the saltwater dish and tapping loudly on the glass.

There are too many tomatoes for our resident groundhog to eat all of them, but we are still trying to figure out how it got into the garden. 😅 We first put the garden in in 2019, and the bunnies have always been kept out of it. Not this savvy groundhog.

We have big plans for our bee garden…our goal is to create a Certified Wildlife Habitat in our green space! This will help give our local flora and fauna a place to thrive, and provide even more opportunities for the children to observe, learn about, tend, and appreciate nature.

These little ceramic sculptures are bee cups! They hold a small amount of water each, and provide hydration for our pollinators. Each one has UV glaze inside them so that the critters can find them more easily. The children were thrilled to find a spot for all of them by the Smelling Plants and tuck them into the soil. Now we watch!
