As they learned about the invention of penicillin, CHE elementary students grew bacteria on Petri dishes and tested antibiotics and oil of oregano (nature’s antibiotic) on the growth. Results speak for themselves: oil of oregano for the win!

People-powered transportation gave way to the steam locomotive being inspired by a pressure cooker, the bicycle originally invented without pedals, a chain, or brakes, and the mass-produced cars.
We learned about weight distribution, speed, and mechanical advantages.

We've been learning about inventions throughout history. This week the topic was those that help us survive in water. The Cartesian diver experiment helps students understand how pressure affects the volume of a gas and how changes in density determine whether an object sinks or floats.

Why is this important? This principle is used to explain how fish are able to control their depth in water... and how we can replicate that for exploration. Only about 5% of the ocean has been actively explored by humans through direct observation like submersibles, while roughly 20% of the ocean floor has been mapped using modern technology. The vast majority of the ocean, more than 80%, remains unmapped, unseen, and unexplored, largely due to its immense scale and the high cost and technical challenges of deep-sea exploration.
