Lots of good facts on Vit D…
We all need it!
For most of our patients, their vit D levels are low below 50 (optinal being 60-90)
****side note****
You only need about 20 minutes of sun exposure a day.
We do know that Vit D can be affected by
1. The latitude at which we live-the higher the latitude, the less UVB rays hitting our skin.
2. Air pollution
3. Sunscreen
4. The color of your skin- your shade of melanin. Dark skinned people require more UVB exposure to generate the same amount of vitamin D as light skinned people.
5. The temperature of your skin- warmer skin will generate more vit D than cooler skin
6. Your age- older people are less efficient vit D producers than younger people (what is old? what is young?- just know it goes down with age 😉).
7. Gut, liver and kidney health can all affect absorption of vit D from foods and supplements.
Vitamin D has other roles in the body, including reduction of inflammation as well as modulation of such processes as cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and glucose metabolism
Let’s just say Vit D should have been called a hormone - it is so important.
