As noone has ever done any real studies on any hedgehogs other than the The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). Who get a little attention because they are constantly in danger due to encrouchment by humans.
Keepers of the The four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) have had to learn by trial and error since they came to the US in the early 1980s.
Unfortunately this often means more errors for the poor little guys than not.
For instance.
We have tried several types of bedding.
Several types of shavings. Which can cause eye injuries, respiratory problems, wood mite infestations. We do not use them for fear of Vet bills.
Pill less Flannel is a favorite of some. My husband does not care for quills in his clean socks… And the only way it did not stink of urine? Was change it every day. Not a fan.
We do use.
Feline Pine Cat Litter. Not woodstove pellets. Not stall pellets. They are not heat treated against wood mites. They do absorb moisture and oder. Alaska Mill& Feed has a 40 lb bag that is a steal of a deal.
My favorite to top the pellets is Brown krinkle Paper. Found on Amazon in 10 lb boxes. If they wont ship it to you? Let me know.

2nd favorite is unscented brown or white Rodent Fluff paper. Purple lavendar scent gives Hedgies sores.

A CLEAN HABITAT IS A HEALTHY HEDGIE!

Check back tomorrow for the water bottle versus water bowl debate.
