Week 3: Prepared to Protect (May 18–24) is about taking simple steps now to protect your home and family later.
✔️ Clear brush, leaves, and firewood at least 5 feet from your home to help reduce wildfire risk
✔️ Trim branches away from roofs and clean gutters
✔️ Insulate exposed pipes and seal drafts before winter
✔️ Anchor heavy furniture, TVs, and water heaters to walls for earthquake safety
✔️ Test smoke and CO alarms monthly
✔️ Repair damaged stairs, railings, and exits
✔️ Sign up for emergency weather and evacuation alerts
✔️ Create a family emergency meeting and evacuation plan
✔️ Keep a 72-hour emergency kit ready with food, water, medications, and flashlights

Last night, the Anchorage Assembly officially recognized May as Building Safety Month and thanked Building Safety and Fire Prevention Code Officials for helping keep our community safe. 👏

Resolution AR 2026-119 recognizes the important work happening every day to help protect lives, property, and resilient communities across Anchorage.

Thank you to the Anchorage Assembly for supporting Building Safety Month and recognizing the professionals working behind the scenes to keep our buildings and community safe.
