Tyson Elementary School

This is the official page of William Tyson Elementary School, a PreK - 5th grade school. Mr. He had three brothers and one sister. and Mrs. Mary's.

Our school is named after William Joseph Tyson, a native elder from our community. Tyson was born on February 23rd, 1916 at Pustuliq, Alaska to Josephine and Lawrence Tyson. His first wife and four of their children all died of TB. He married Marie in 1948 and she became a stepmother to three of his living children. William and Marie had nine children of their own. He and Marie lived in the Alakan

uk area for many years where his siblings lived. In his early years, William was a postmaster, a school teacher, and an interpreter for the Catholic church. Even at an early age, he tried hard to combine his Yup'ik roots to the changes brought by early settlers. Soon, boarding schools were being built. Tyson couldn't bear the thought of being away from their children. So they moved to the town that harbored the nearest boarding school: St. By this time, his brothers had died of the TB epidemic. Their youngest son was born sickly and needed to be near a medical facility. Once again, Mr. Tyson were forced to move due to circumstances beyond their control. This time, further away, to Anchorage. Tyson worked at the Calista Native Corporation until his retirement. He was an advocate for Alaska Native people at the beginning of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and tribal enrollment. In 1976, he was ordained a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church, and conducted church services at the Alaska Native Medical Center, correctional facilities, and in many villages in the "Yup'ik areas" of Alaska. Though living in the city, he never forgot his Yup'ik values and practiced them whenever possible. He helped preserve the Yup'ik culture by teaching dances and traditions at schools, churches, prisons, various gatherings, ceremonies, and meetings all across the city, state, and various parts of the country. He received many awards including Parent of the Year, Elder of the Year, being a "chief" of Elitnaurvik at East High School. Even after his passing, his widow and children continues to get plaques in his honor from various gatherings and events.

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW due to icy roads. Stay safe everyone!

All ASD schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 16, due to freezing rain, icy roads, and high winds.

Due to projected freezing rain, icy roads, and high winds, all ASD schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 16. The Administration has consulted with the National Weather Service, Department of Transportation and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. All information indicates that driving in the morning hours and throughout the school day will be unsafe. Employees should follow emergency closure procedures for their building or department as outlined in the ASD Emergency Closure Plan or guidance from ASD Labor Relations.

Please be safe out on the roads.

School is OPEN today! School busses may be delayed. Any students who cannot make it to school due to the snow will be excused.

Good morning, ASD families,

We’re waking up to our first big snowfall of the season, and the Anchorage School District is open today.

Because of the snow, bus service for Girdwood K-8 is canceled. Buses in many other areas are running but may be delayed as drivers take it slow and safe this morning.

If your student can’t make it to school because of the weather, their absence will be excused.

We know mornings like this can be tricky. Thanks for your patience, and please be safe out there today.
