Friendly reminder that fireweed shoots can be cooked like asparagus. Fry in some garlic butter or throw them on the grill. Enjoy!

Look at what's cooking this summer for the Kitchen!
The Kitchen's project manager, Melissa Chlupach, is teaming up with NATIFS and Alaska Native (Tlingit) chef Rob Kinneen for a camp session at the Nudlaghi Leadership Institute in Lake Clark National Park. The session is titled Gather, Cook, Learn: Honoring Culture Through Indigenous Foods and will be offered July 24th through July 26th.
This session is geared for food service workers, chefs, nutrition professionals, and managers in K–12 schools, colleges, hospitals, eldercare facilities, childcare centers, and community programs who want to incorporate Indigenous foods into their menus in culturally respectful and operationally feasible ways.

In this new video, Indigenous Chef Flora Deacon prepares a hearty whitefish stew. According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game (ADF&G), "Whitefish are the most abundant group of fish north of the Alaska Range, inhabiting almost every type of river and freshwater habitat in this section of Alaska." There are several species, including seven smaller varieties highlighted in ADF&G’s Whitefish Species document linked below.

Chef Flora states this dish is fairly simple, reflecting the kinds of foods she grew up with. One key difference in this recipe, however, is the addition of tomato sauce. Traditionally, tomatoes weren’t included in soups—but in this version, it adds a new depth of flavor that complements the dish nicely.
A huge thank you to UAA Faculty Success for creating this video for the Kitchen.
Enjoy!

It’s that time! Time for hooligan. Be safe and have fun.
🚗🐟 Hooligan Fishing Access Update – Turnagain Arm
DOT&PF has improved access for the personal use hooligan fishery along Turnagain Arm. Three designated parking areas are now available between MP 80–83 on the Seward Highway, connected by a new multi-use pathway to help you reach popular fishing spots safely.
With these upgrades in place, highway parking is no longer allowed in this area.
Please remember:
• Park in designated lots only
• Follow posted signs and traffic control
• Use the pathway to access fishing areas
These improvements are designed to make travel safer for everyone - both on the road and along the shoreline.
📍 See the infographic for parking locations and details

Something to look forward to in October ❤️
Have you heard? We have a theme, artwork AND a partner for our upcoming Alaska Food Festival & Conference in October!
For our 9th edition of this conference, we are proud to collaborate with Native Movement, an Alaska-based Indigenous-led nonprofit that organizes grassroots advocacy, education, and movement-building around Indigenous rights, environmental justice, food sovereignty, and community-led social change.
Our theme this year is "Cultivating Community, Harvesting Hope" which has been beautifully captured by our Conference Artist Brianna Reagan. Brianna is an Alaska-based artist, illustrator, and designer whose work is rooted in curiosity and a deep connection to the natural world. With a background in fine art, Brianna creates detailed, hand-illustrated work. Her creative practice spans painting, drawing, commercial illustration, logo design and branding, and surface pattern design.
