Thomas Hanks is from Anchorage, AK, and he graduated from South High School in 2017. He completed his undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at Arizona State University and graduated in May 2021. He enjoys working out, hiking, snowboarding, cooking, and spending time with his family.
It has been awesome for Thomas being a part of the WWAMI program so far, and he is really looking forward to sharing more information with the students tonight.

Sarah Rasmussen-Rehkopf is Quileute and Makah from the northwest coast of Washington and grew up in southeast Alaska. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Linfield College. She is currently a first-year medical student at the University of Washington School of Medicine at the Alaska campus. Her interests include American Indian Alaska Native (AIAN) health, social and structural determinants of health, and legislative advocacy and community health.

Noelle Coniglio is a first year medical student as well. She is from Eagle River, Alaska, she went to high school at West High, and then got her Bachelors of Science in Health and Human Performance from Montana State University. She is still undecided on what her specialty will be – medicine has so many intriguing possibilities! – but she is especially excited about Emergency Medicine as well as full-spectrum Family Medicine. In her free time, she loves to ski, run, climb, fish, and make (and eat!) lots of delicious food.

Tanya Charoonsophonsak, a first-generation Alaskan and UAA’s fall 2021 commencement speaker, is encouraging her class to continue making transformational changes that will not only impact them now but for generations to come.

Charoonsophonsak said she’s watched her parents make big, daring decisions, and that their resiliency inspired her commencement speech. Motivated by her parents and the risks and sacrifices they made to provide opportunities for a better future, Charoonsophonsak invites her classmates to do the same.

“I took their story and idea and related that to our class's journey currently — as graduates in 2021,” Charoonsophonsak said. “We’re all resilient; that can’t be stated enough. But for those who continued and didn’t take a break, we’re making transformational change for ourselves. And we may not see it directly right now, but our future generations will, just like my parents did.”

UAA will celebrate the fall Class of 2021 on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Alaska Airlines Center (ticketed guests only) and online. For details, visit uaa.alaska.edu/commencement.

Physician/Nurse talk
Joining us tonight will be Kimberly, an RN who graduated with her BSN from UAA in 2018 and current works on the inpatient floor at ANMC. Also Joining us will be Dr. Maddox, an internal medicine osteopathic physician affiliated with numerous hospitals in Anchorage to include ANMC.

Feel free to bring any questions to the table that you have for our guest speakers tonight. One of the key points in having a nurse and physician join us, however, is to hear from providers more about the vast variety of options that exist in the healthcare world and what led them down the paths they chose. Especially nowadays since COVID, shadowing has become incredibly difficult to come by. Shadowing is normally the route that us pre-healthcare professionals take to get an understanding for where we will best fit in the system of healthcare, so I hope that this opportunity helps to answer some questions for all of us in that regard.

The meeting tonight will begin at 6:30 PM! I hope to see you there!

Just two more AMSA meetings before the end of the semester and a well-deserved winter break! In the spirit of taking breaks and mental fortitude, our meeting tonight will be focussed around mental health in medical education. That’s why we are excited to bring Dr. David Sperbeck, a doctor of psychology and professor who regularly works with medical students and residents to tonight’s virtual meeting to talk about balance and satisfaction through medical education. Because he is only able to join us virtually we will be holding the meeting strictly virtually again tonight. We hope to see you there!
