The Orange County Registrar of Voters has extended the candidate filing period thru 5pm on March 11th.

PRESS RELEASE — Candidate Filing Period Extended Through March 11 for Select Offices

The incumbents in these offices did not file for re-election, which extends the filing period to allow other qualified candidates to file

SANTA ANA, Calif. – March 7, 2026 – Individuals interested in running for three offices now have more time to file a declaration of candidacy with the Registrar of Voters because an eligible incumbent did not file.

New qualified candidates for the offices listed below can file during the extension period, which closes at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11.

Incumbents are no longer eligible to be placed on the ballot for that office in the June 2, 2026, Statewide Direct Primary Election because they failed to file nomination papers for the office by the original March 6 deadline.

Candidacy documents will be available Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Registrar of Voters, 1300 S. Grand Ave., Building C in Santa Ana.

The Registrar of Voters also provides a detailed Candidate’s Handbook with information about the candidate filing process at ocvote.gov/candidates. Additional online resources include a frequently asked questions section and a candidate filing log.

On November 13th, 2025 the AUHSD School Board appointed Dr. Macgalas to serve out Trustee Katherine H. Smith’s seat. Dr. Magcalas ran against Smith in 2024. Smith won that election, but resigned from the board in September after 29 years on the board,allowing for the Special Appointment.
Dr. Macgalas is a Cal State LA professor, former Loara high school teacher & former AESD trustee who grew up in Anaheim.

At the AESD Special Board meeting on Wednesday, April 16th Alva Alvarez was appointed to the Area 4 Trustee by a vote of 3 - 0, with Ryan Ruales abstaining. Ms. Alvarez was the only applicant for the open seat, after the other applicant withdrew. Ms. Alvarez is a Mental Health Specialist at Santa Ana Unified School District. AESD School Board President Juan Alvarez disclosed that Ms. Alvarez is his cousin, but did not recluse himself from the proceedings nor the vote. Anaheim Elementary School District is hosting a Special Meeting on Wednesday, April 16th at 5pm to interview and appoint Provisional Area 4 School Board Trustees. The 2 candidates are both related to either current or former school board members. The public is allowed to give comment on these candidates at the April 15th meeting.
