Eternally grateful we can still link up, get along famously, and drop words you really can't say anymore in polite company.

Early on, my parents impressed upon me that "old is gold." And I credit "Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen" with these lyrics that cemented this concept:

What a thrill catching up with William Wineberg (Willie) here in LA!

Out of 500 classmates in Fairfield High School (OH) Class of '94, Willie was our only celebrity: after being the first freshman in 52 years to win state (Ohio) in wrestling, he went on to win all four years, becoming the ONLY person in history to do so. He landed in Sports Illustrated.

More imporant than being a superb athlete, Willie was liked by every single one of us. Humble, nice, and funny—he was (and is) a role model for all of us.

And so I was honored when he asked me to speak to his wrestling students, the same program in which he himself participated when he was a kid. The boys ranged in age from 5th to 10th grade.

I picked Willie up after he, his wife, and daughter did the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood here in Burbank. We linked up at the SmokeHouse (shooting location for so many TV shows and movies, including La La Land, Argo, and The Office (US)).

I drove him to the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, where I met the team.

I am so truly grateful for your friendship over the years. It'd been so long but we picked up right where we left off. Willie, it was great to see you living YOUR dream back in our home state—good luck on the rest of your 58-day tour! (I think I have that number right.)

Y'all are doing an amazing job of guiding these boys. They were inquisitive, respectful, and, most of all, funny. Of course I had to say that's the most important thing.

Well, maybe it's the respect thing: a hand-signed letter in 2025? I'm keeping that with all of my Fairfield, Ohio, memorabilia.

This is the first of two years most of our class turns 50!

This is Rajiv Satyal. Not surprisingly, I'm gonna celebrate in Las Vegas on March 7th weekend (2026).

Generally, I'm not posting this publicly, but since y'all mean so much to me, you're more than welcome to come celebrate your own 50th. I'm imagining this as its own mini-reunion.

Besides, given our academic cutoff was Oct 1, March 7 is pretty darn close to halfway.
