🧱Your child has built a wall of blocks around every stuffed animal in their room.

🪆Later that same day, they’ve wrapped a doll in three blankets and hidden it under the couch cushions.

❓Two completely different activities, as far as you can tell.

📨They’re not. Enclosing and Enveloping are two expressions of the same underlying schema — enclosing is surrounding something with a border (the fence, the wall, the drawn line around a figure), enveloping is covering or wrapping it (the blanket, the buried toy, the hiding place).

🧠Both are the brain exploring inside and outside, boundary and containment — the earliest groundwork for categorization and spatial reasoning.

📨This is the Enclosing & Enveloping schema — and children need it because “inside” and “outside” are ideas that have to be experienced before they can be understood.

🧱Let them build the fence. Let them wrap the doll. It’s not two random behaviors — it’s one big question about boundaries, asked two different ways.
