🧐There's a small but real difference between "Oh, the block tower fell" and "You built the blocks too high, so your tower fell over."

💙The first one reflects back what's happening. The second one hands over the answer.

💙When you are invited into a child's play, observing and speaking those observations out loud create connection and show the child you are present.

💙When you tell a child what's wrong, why something happened, or try to solve the problem... you are interrupting and even possibly shutting down their play.

📣Narration keeps the discovery theirs. Direction quietly takes the discovery away.

🤯This one took me a while to actually sink in.

😔Society and much of my training had told me that I am the one in charge of learning, I am the one who has to bestow knowledge upon the young children in my care.

😬Boy was I WRONG! Children know what they need when it comes to learning and when adults trust that... magic happens.

🤓Witnessing sounds passive, but it's not — it takes real attention to watch closely enough to know what's actually happening, without jumping in to fix, correct, or steer.

👍The setup was your job. Once play starts, the job shifts.

👀You're not directing anymore. You're paying attention.

🏀A heavy ball rolls differently than a light one.

🪶A scarf floats where a block drops straight down.

💙Every material swap is a new experiment a kid gets to run with their own hands, no instructions required.

💙That's the actual reason variety matters — not because more is better, but because different textures and weights are literally different lessons in disguise.

💙The more a child is able to explore, the more they are learning.

❓Ever notice how a fancy toy gets ten minutes of attention and a cardboard box gets the whole afternoon?

💙That's not random. A toy that only does one thing has already made all the decisions for the kid using it.

💙A pile of rocks, fabric scraps, containers — that's still wide open.

💙The materials with the fewest instructions are usually doing the most work, inviting the most play and providing the most learning.

💙I get the instinct to fill a shelf with options — more toys feels like more opportunity.

💙But a packed shelf actually asks a kid to make more decisions before they've even started playing, which can be its own kind of overwhelming.

💙A few well-chosen things, with room to actually spread out and use them? That's not less. That's a clear invitation to play

‼️This is such an easy one to fall into, believe me, I've been there!!

⏳It took a long time to retrain my brain to ask Open Ended Questions.

✅Open ended questions have more than one answer and require the child to think, make connections, be creative.

❎But closed questions with one right answer quietly turn play into a quiz, and I don't know about you... but pop quizzes send me into a panic.

🥳The good news is the fix is small — swap "What color is that" for "Tell me about the colors you picked", and watch the whole conversation change.

🤯Here's a shift in thinking — the space itself, before a single toy gets added, is already teaching something.

💙An open floor says move freely. A cluttered shelf says be careful.

💙Kids read environments the way we read a room's mood the second we walk in.

💙So before you think about what to put IN the space, it's worth asking what the space itself is already saying.
