RAWNY members Matt K2EAG, Angela N3ARB, Meg W2MEG, and Jess KE2GZY took part in the US Islands QSO Party August 29–30, joining four fellow hams from Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The group spent Saturday operating from two islands on Pymatuning Reservoir, traveling by pontoon boat between the islands and enjoying some perfect late-summer weather along the way.

It was also a chance to get together with friends who will be part of next year’s N4T Dry Tortugas Expedition—making for a fun weekend both on and off the air!

Fun fact—Did you know Pymatuning Lake was a secret WWII testing site? During the war, the Westinghouse plant in Sharon, PA built the top-secret Mk-18 electric torpedo. Because it was battery-powered, it left no wake—making it invisible to enemy ships. Westinghouse secretly tested these silent weapons in an area of the lake still known today as Westinghouse Bay, playing a massive but hidden role in Allied naval history!

Visit the Buffalo Main Lighthouse during the International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend, Saturday, August 15!

The Radio Association of Western New York will be joining almost 300 lighthouses and lightships from around the world, making contacts with each other and other amateur radio stations.

RAWNY is excited to operate from the lighthouse grounds with the special event callsign K2L—first used from this lighthouse during International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend in 1999.

Join us as we celebrate the Buffalo Main Lighthouse and learn about amateur radio while exploring Buffalo’s rich maritime history. We look forward to seeing you!
