SE MN will be the big winners of snowfall from this significant storm.
Thursday is looking very very very nasty. Blizzard Warning now in effect for Ames northward through Mason City and up through southern Minnesota. Thunderstorms will start off Wednesday night through Thursday with rainfall up to half an inch. Convection will definately be there for thundersnow (pretty rare) with rates of 2 inches a hour. Gusts are expected to be around 55 mph at peak in Ames. Thursday morning commute should be fine but when kids get home from school it will be NASTY with the fast rates of snow falling. Pretty concerned about power outages also at this time. Travel will be NEAR IMPOSSIBLE after noon on Thursday. Snow totals Ames 6-7 inches. Des Moines 4.5, Mason City 9.5-11 , Decorah 10 to 12.

Snowfall reports across the state. Ames: 3.0. The Cedar Rapids and Waterloo areas look to be the big winners.

To my MN and WI friends. Could see very heavy snow during the 6-9 am period where 1 to 2 inch hour rates will be occurring. Expect delays. Along the Mississippi River and to the east look to be the big winners with snow totals.
So apparently I am the/a new forecaster for the page for hazardous weather. Darren pretty much summed up the situation for tomorrow, but looking further in the week it looks like we could get another wintery mix event around Wednesday or Thursday, in addition to MUCH warmer air temps!
Messy setup for the morning. Freezing rain and sleet will start off from Des Moines to Ames then changing over to all snow. Snowfall rates of 2-3 from Ames northward. Ames should see about 2. Des Moines with less due to more freezing rain and then sleet mixin. All during the busiest time of the morning commute tomorrow morning so take it easy out there.
Changed the page name. This page will be out there to relay the public day to day of the changing and upcoming weather.
Should be in tornado watch any moment.
Best tornado chances have shifted closer to Des Moines now to Omaha stay on guard!
