Caught these voles, along with a bunch of their friends, eating some seedlings we planted yesterday. So far it seems like a really good year for these guys, vole numbers have been abnormally high at Oakridge. Anyone else been seeing them around?

Showy ticktrefoil and hoary verbena are starting to bloom along with wild rye, porcupine grass, side oats grama, and sunflowers. Looks like big blue stem will be soon to follow...

Black-eyed Susan and purple prairie clover are in bloom at Oakridge, soon to be followed by yellow cone flower! Have you seen anything flowering lately? Leave a note in the comments with wildflowers you've seen in bloom anywhere in central Iowa.

The ISU mammalogy class, taught by Mike Rentz, came out to Oakridge this week to monitor small mammal populations. For this time of year, there seems to be a good number of critters that made it through the winter: saw plenty of field and harvest mice and a handful of prairie voles.

We will be hosting another Community Q&A Meeting on Saturday, April 19 at 10:00 am in the Applied Sciences 2 building on Iowa State's Campus.
This meeting is a great way to ask questions about what we are doing at Oakridge, learn about the results of our research, or learn how you can get involved.

Lauren will be presenting on some of the exciting research conducted at Oakridge at the Iowa chapter of The Wildlife Society Winter Meeting on Thursday, Feb 20 from 8:50-9:10. The meeting will be held at the Quality Inn and Suites in Ames IA. We encourage you to attend if you are interested in herbivore effects on seed dispersal!
