Boredom is becoming an endangered experience.
We’ve gotten awfully good at filling every gap.
An empty moment isn’t a problem.
But every empty moment can now be filled.
Every line.
Every car ride.
Every awkward silence.
Boredom has always been fertile territory.
A little restlessness. Nothing on offer.
Then the mind starts making something of its own.
Give the mind some room.
It’s where games get invented.
Where thoughts wander somewhere unexpected.
A little practice thinking for yourself.
Stay a little longer.
You stare into a fire for twenty minutes and eventually somebody says something real.
Not every good thing happens on cue.
Maybe we’re solving the wrong problem.
Young people need room to invent, to think, to find out what holds their attention.
Fill every gap, and we may crowd out exactly what we want to grow.
