Taylor Academy Update, Thursday, June 16, 2022
In the words of the famous philosopher and poet, Mike Rutherford, the bass player from the band Genesis, who created the band Mike and the Mechanics as a side project, "Every new beginning, comes from some other beginning's end." This line from the song "The Living Years" sums up the problematic situation Taylor Academy: Exceptional Defined finds itself in.
As has been the case for four amazing years, Scholar W, Scholar N, and Scholar J have been full time enrolled in either Alma Public Schools or Taylor Academy. There were times when they were enrolled in both schools receiving excellent instruction from some of the best educators found anywhere. Mr. Dad often found himself wearing many different hats including Principal of Taylor Academy, lead instructor, Dean of Mean, er Discipline, Culture Curator, Curriculum Advisor, Food Service Planner, and most importantly Dad. You see Taylor Academy was indeed an academic institution and yet served a different purpose as well; Taylor Academy was a way to chronicle the educational and personal experience of life in the beginning stages of the Covid Pandemic.
Now Taylor Academy finds it's youngest scholar, Scholar A, becoming an APS Panther in the fall. With enrollment at an all time low, zero students, Mr. Dad was able to see the writing on the wall that Taylor Academy would indeed close its doors permanently. His occupation paying a salary of zero dollars with zero benefits would soon be ending. With this reality squarely hitting Mr. Dad in the face like a lemon meringue pie, Mr. Dad, over the course of the past month and a half, began aggressively working with the Michigan Department of Education to transfer his Indiana Teaching License to the great state of Michigan, while simultaneously securing an interview with Alma Public Schools. This interview was followed up with the opportunity to receive a second interview with Alma Public Schools Superintendent and was offered a position for the 2022-2023 school year as a fourth grade teacher. Mr. Dad even received a passing vote at the most recent school board meeting indicating that he was indeed hired. Mr. Dad will transition back to Mr. Taylor, classroom teacher, again after a four year classroom break.
The experiences of Taylor Academy indeed helped all members of this prestigious institution survive during the school shutdown at the beginning of the pandemic and will serve as a great way to look back at a once in a lifetime worldwide event (please, once in my life, PLEASE), Mr. Dad, I mean Mr. Taylor is really looking forward to having a classroom and investing in the lives of many scholars, knowing full well that his most important scholars, W, N, J, and A are being invested into by GREAT teachers as well and he gets to be just Dad again.
In the words of the Arny, the former govenator of California, "I'll be back!" AND it appears that Mr. Taylor is back this August!
