It was announced today that the Rev. Jesse Jackson has passed away at age 84.
I had the opportunity to photograph him in December of 1976 as he delivered a speech to a Pennsylvania state education organization in Philadelphia.
I was 16years old, and the Director of Public Relations for my school district was an officer of this organization, and he hired me to photograph the two-day event. This was one of my early paying gigs.
I remember being very frustrated with the lighting, and I learned some tough lessons about choosing your shooting spot when you're locked into that position for an entire speech. I had already photographed President Gerald Ford and then-candidate Jimmy Carter, so I knew it was all about the gestures when photographing someone at a podium.
These photos never made my portfolio - I am not proud of them. They carry meaning for me because, at 16 years old, even though I knew little at the time about the full story behind the man who was called a civil rights leader, it was obvious to me that he would impact many.
His speech was captivating. His presence was larger than life, and honestly, much of what he spoke just made sense.
One of my favorite quotes comes from Jesse Jackson: "Both tears and sweat are salty, but they render a different result. Tears will get you sympathy; sweat will get you change."
That statement was made in the context of the civil rights movement, but like many wise words, it is a life lesson that can be applied to so many things - even photography!
