Viktor Frankl Institute of America

Viktor Frankl Institute of America http://www.viktorfranklamerica.com Frankl is rightly regarded as one of the greatest minds of our time and as one of the greatest men of our time.

Dr. Viktor Frankl, author of “Man’s Search for Meaning”: these words evoke a wide range of emotions in all those who have ever come in touch with the man or his work. He gave the world new scientific theories, creating outstanding contributions to psychiatry, psychology and neurology, while he helped us find our soul, our meaning , our purpose, our place in the world. Alexander Vesely, grandson of

Viktor Frankl, coined the phrase “Pioneer of Meaning” for his famous grandfather. For the past three years Alex traveled the world over to interview friends and colleagues to record their perspectives on how Viktor Frankl lived his theories. The result is this fascinating documentary, showing Frankl as he was seen by students and peers, friends and relatives, acquaintances both professional and private. We can witness a variety of encounters and anecdotes from funny to profound, from sentimental to inspiring - but always full of insight into a most human, and humane, personality. This is a film about a man with a sharp mind and a warm heart, who loved life, family and people, loved learning, healing and teaching, and enjoyed humor - all in the face of and in spite of tremendous personal suffering..

For Frankl, education is ultimately education toward responsibility: helping young people develop the capacity to discern meaning and respond responsibly to life.

Viktor Frankl challenged the idea that self-actualization should be pursued as an end in itself. Human existence is self-transcendent: it reaches beyond itself toward a cause to serve or a person to love. Self-actualization, in Frankl’s view, can occur only as a by-product of such
self-transcendence.

From Viktor Frankl’s television interviews, “Self-actualization is Not the Goal,” Noetic Films.

On this day, we remember Viktor E. Frankl, whose life and work continue to inspire people around the world.

Frankl taught that even in the face of suffering, we retain the freedom to choose our attitude—and that life continues to hold the possibility of meaning.

His message was never simply about surviving difficult circumstances. It was an invitation to ask:

What is life asking of me?

More than a quarter-century after his death, Frankl’s voice continues to resonate—in therapy rooms, classrooms, hospitals, communities, and in the lives of those searching for hope and meaning.

His life ended.
His work did not.

Today, we honor his memory by continuing the conversation he began: How do we live meaningfully, even when life is difficult?

Logotherapy places responsibility at the center of human existence. Life is constantly passing, but meaning we realize is not lost . The possibilities we turn into reality become part of what we permanently brought into the world.

Viktor Frankl agreed with Ruskin: true greatness is found in lifting others up. To preserve human dignity and help another person is one of the highest expressions of our humanity.

Viktor Frankl chose gratitude over resentment. Having survived the concentration camps, he rejected collective guilt and affirmed the responsibility of each individual. We are more than the categories others place upon us. We are responsible for our own choices.

Viktor Frankl saw the existential vacuum as one of the defining struggles of modern life: a sense of emptiness, boredom, and lack of direction.

When meaning is absent, that void can be filled by destructive pursuits. The answer is not simply to escape the void, but to discover what makes life worth living.

We cannot always choose our circumstances. Viktor Frankl reminds us that we can still choose our response. Our freedom may be limited by biological, psychological, and social conditions, but we retain the freedom to take a stand toward them.
