Silhouette Spotlight: Congratulations to Silhouette Faith T. Blackburne-Proctor!

During the NAACP's Annual Meeting in New York on February 11, 2025, the Board of Directors re-elected Chair Leon W. Russell and Vice-Chair Karen Boykin-Towns, while also welcoming new and returning members, including Silhouette Faith Blackburne Proctor. Her selection underscores her leadership and commitment to fighting for equality and justice in a time when our nation faces significant challenges.

NAACP Chair Leon W. Russell emphasized the organization's enduring mission to protect civil rights and democracy, while President and CEO Derrick Johnson highlighted the critical role of the Board in addressing ongoing threats to progress. Yesterday, Brothers of the Eastern Province Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and some other members from the D9 gathered at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Northwest Washington, D.C., on Sunday for a peaceful gathering marked by prayer, song, and reflection on the legacy of the iconic BLM mural slated for removal. Eastern Province Polemarch Richard Mattox emphasized the event’s purpose was one of unity, not protest, stating, “We stand here in solidarity because that’s what the mural represents.” He stressed that the mural symbolizes an enduring movement, not merely words on pavement, and urged against historical erasure: “As community leaders, how can we stand by and allow this piece of history to vanish?”

While expressing support for Mayor Muriel Bowser and acknowledging the complexities of her administration’s decisions, Mattox underscored the importance of preserving the mural’s message. “We fully back the mayor,” he said, “but we cannot forget why this mural was created in the first place.”
