On this day of remembrance, ACCELerate would like to acknowledge the 11,324 U.S. Merchant Marines that died during WWII while supplying the various branches of the armed forces and joint operations with the tools needed to win the war. The Merchant Marine Act of 1936 made these civilian mariners part of the armed forces during war, but they were not accorded veteran status. During WWII, these unsung heroes suffered a higher causality rate than all the other branches.
