๐ฆฟWe donโt โwear & tearโ just because we play sports, run, or lift heavy weights. Yes โdegenerativeโ changes do take place as we ageโฆ but those are really just wrinkles on the inside as studies show they donโt correlate with pain/dysfunction.
๐ Our bodies are so malleable to the demands placed on them and crave movement to keep the system healthy.
๐ฆดOsteoarthritis (OA) is complex. It largely has to do with genetics, sedentary lifestyle, poor eating habits, traumatic events, and yes the risk can slightly increase (~3%) if one competitively participates in extremely high amounts of running. Some studies define this as a weekly mileage over 43-57 miles.
๐ซIMO, this 3% increase in risk is nothing compared to the immense benefits gained in quality of life, cardiovascular health, mindset, etc.
๐ฅDespite popular belief, running can be one of the most powerful activities to preserve your knees and hips from OA. Studies have shown long-term recreational running decreases your risk of hip and knee OA by 7%! How โbout dat!
โก๏ธWhen load is managed properly, exercise/running shows powerful benefits in promoting cartilage/joint health.
๐ฟDonโt let anyone push you away from the activities you love to do. And donโt worry about โwear and tearโ with exercise. Instead focus on how exercise helps you โgrow and glowโ!

๐ฅ Iโm blessed to have a rotation with a supportive work environment and patient CI! (I definitely need the patience!!) Iโm working on the ortho/trauma floor and seeing COVID patients as well.
1๏ธโฃ Entering a patient room with compassion, curiosity, and empathy sets the tone for trust as well as a productive session. My CI has shown me patients buy in when you care and want the best for them.
2๏ธโฃ Awareness and focus go a long way in successfully working with a complex patient. Itโs important to scan the room and understand whatโs hooked up to the patient. This allows for a smoother, more efficient and safe treatment session as lines and tubes can easily be overlooked.
3๏ธโฃ Understand that the confidence comes with practice. Iโm not totally confident in what Iโm doing yet. However, Iโm learning the more deliberate and intentional you are with your craft the more steadily your confidence will build. Donโt beat yourself up, instead let your mistakes excite you as a chance to grow.
๐ฅThose are 3 lessons Iโve learned and some thought about how to apply them!
โ๏ธWhat is a lesson youโve learned on your clinical rotations?
08/10/2021
Iโm definitely still navigating communication with patients.
Thereโs been lots of times as a PT tech Iโve rubbed people the wrong way with my words, even if I had good intentions.
As I begin to get ready for my first acute care rotation, Iโm starting to reflect on what Iโve learned from my experiences as well as other PTs on effectively using our words with patients.
The second list is based off of my opinion. It will never be my approach to be someone who fixes or โrealignsโ people. From what Iโve learned from PTs I admire as well as research, these narratives lead patients to believe their health is in someone elseโs hands. This unwarranted increased reliance on the healthcare system can be disastrous for some people.
Iโve learned from awesome PTs that empowerment and facilitation of exercise through listening and encouragement is the best thing we can do for patients.
In addition, Iโve been taught that itโs powerful to embrace uncertainty and the nuance- itโs okay to not know the answer.
What are some other phrases you would add to the first list?

โ๏ธ Now that we know how creatine works, the benefits of it, and that it is safe, we can get into how to dose it!
๐ This post is specifically for optimizing movement performance and is not geared for the brain enhancing benefits or medical related uses.
๐ซ Dosing is really not that complex and is pretty simple to follow. The most important factor is taking your dose(s) consistently.
โก๏ธ If you miss one day, itโs not a problem because it takes weeks for your creatine levels to go back to baseline of when you first started taking it. However, making it a habit to take can be very beneficial for optimizing itโs use.
๐ The recommendation of 20 grams for a load day and 5 grams on a maintenance day are ball park numbers. This rec is a great rule of thumb - you can and should stick with it to keep it simple. However, for those who want to get into the weeds:
๐Researchers also recommend using this formula to calculate how much creatine to use for your loading phase: (Body Weight in Kilos) x .3 grams
- Someone who is 100 kilos should load with 30 grams of creatine a day.
- Divide that number by 4 and you get ~ 8 grams of creatine per maintenance day for some who weighs 100Kg.
๐ Let me know if you have questions or just let me know what you think!!

๐ YES! Creatine is a naturally occurring substance in our muscles and brain! Itโs function is to allow for replenishment of ATP (energy).
๐ฅฉ Chances are you are already consuming creatine, if you are a meat eater.
๐ฅฆ People on a plant-based diet can reap enormous benefits through creatine supplementation because their baseline stores are much lower.
๐ฅ The International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN) is supportive of its use in healthy individuals and creatine is generally recognized as safe by the FDA.
โก๏ธ Emerging research is even showing benefits for people with neurodegenerative conditions (ie. Parkinsons), people with heart disease, people who are pregnant, and other conditions.
๐ฅ However, if you have a medical condition, it is important to talk with your doctor before starting any new supplement or medication.
๐งItโs import to also remember that creatine needs to be dosed properly. Nearly anything in excess can be detrimental.
๐ Next weekโs post will take a look out how to load and dose creatine to obtain the maximum benefit!

๐ Phosphocreatine is a naturally occurring substance in our muscles and brain that allows for an extra source of ATP (energy) replenishment.
๐ Oral creatine supplementation has shown to increase the existing levels of phosphocreatine within our muscles and brain.
๐ This discovery has lead to some astounding benefits! (See post above.)
๐ With the elevation in phosphocreatine, our muscles have the ability to work at higher intensities for longer periods of time.
๐ฅ This allows you to push out more reps in the gym or finish your last couple sprints with more โmmmph!โ
๐ช๐พYou likely will not increase muscle growth much from merely taking creatine. You must take advantage of the ability to train harder and longer to get the maximum benefits of creatine!
๐ง๐ฝ However, a recent study showed that older adults taking creatine for 14 days WITHOUT training significantly increased in grip strength and lower body endurance!!! (Stout et al. 2007)

It hyped me up to see that the paper had 45 downloads this past year!! (Which is a lot to me!) โ๏ธ
Not only is it great to help others learn of this research, but I surely will and am thrilled to apply this research to my own clinical practice. ๐ฅผ
The key takeaway we found in this paper is that ๐ณ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฎ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐บ๐ฎ๐ ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ ๐ณ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ป ๐ต๐ฎ๐บ๐๐๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐น๐ผ๐ฝ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ compared to males, as females generally have a slower rate of force development (power) in their hamstrings relative to their quadriceps. ๐
Itโs well known throughout the literature that femalesโ risk for knee injury through sport is 3-6x greater than men. Itโs likely this slower rate of force production at the hamstrings may be a contributor to this heightened knee injury risk. ๐ฏ
What exercises are your favorite to train your hammies? ๐ฆต๐ผ

My name is Ethan Mitchell... and I am a first year Doctor of Physical Therapy student at Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas. I am very passionate about this profession and the benefits that it brings to our country.โฃ
โฃ
Physical therapists have the ability to save the healthcare system boat loads of money in many different ways. The evidence about this is out and it is clear as day. (https://www.ptforpain.org/the-value-of-pt) Physical therapists are the premier musculoskeletal care providers, prevent unnecessary surgeries, expensive MRIs, and other very costly and invasive health care services.โฃ
โฃ
Physical therapists empower patients and help them put their health in their own hands. There is extremely strong evidence to prove that patients who feel their health is in their hands have much better health outcomes and therefore reduce the burden on our healthcare system. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6626892/)โฃ
โฃ
Physical therapists are in the best position out of all healthcare providers to help empower patients to make lifestyle changes and decrease the cost of health care through promotion of health and wellness. Physical therapists help patients, help themselves.โฃ
โฃ
Please don't let this profession be pulled down, rather encourage us all by preventing these pay cuts. โฃ

^^^These may be some common thoughts when SPTs/ Pre-PTs consider starting a social media brand. However, the facts are:โฃ
โฃ
โ
People DO want to listen to you.โฃ
โ
You donโt need credentials to share what youโve learned.โฃ
โ
You know more than you think; you go to class everyday and material is fresh on your mind!โฃ
โ
Youโre going to have greater motivation to learn and seek new experiences to share it on your account!โฃ
โฃ
๐ฅ When I started this account as a Junior in undergrad, it was about my opportunity to teach others and take my learning to the next level. Itโs now also a platform I use to try to inspire.โฃ
โฃ
๐ฒ Instagram is a positive place with people full of encouragement. So many great people are waiting to connect with you!โฃ
โฃ
๐ก Keep in mind, you have to be welcome to constructive criticism. We are still learning and are not always going to be spot on with what we post. โฃ
โฃ
๐ฏEarly into this account, I was highly influenced by and .dpt . Taylor pushed me to be more accurate with the content I posted and gave me grace by saying โThe best time to mess up is now, when youโre young and not many people are watching.โ Kevin also pushed me to dig into research more and find more credible sources (hint: donโt use WebMD๐).โฃ
โฃ
๐ฃIt is OKAY to mess up. No one is always right. Being wrong is an opportunity for growth. Iโm happy Iโve been wrong many times so I can correct my mistakes and try my best to be closer to right the next time.โฃ
