Excellent discussion of why child care is hard too find, too expensive, and under pays its employees.
Planet Money - Baby's first market failure Anyone who has tried shopping for day care knows that it is tough out there. For one, it is hard even to get your hands on information about costs, either online or over the phone – day cares will often only share their prices after you have taken a tour of their facilities. On the heels of a supreme court decision that leaves many of us feeling angry, bewildered, and scared, it's more important than ever to commit ourselves to embracing the humanity of those we may not agree with. This requires that we approach others with genuine curiosity, even as judgemental thoughts threaten to take over. We asked 8 child care workers about their joys and frustrations. Here's what they said Staffing shortages and turnover have been problems in early education for years, but the pandemic took those issues from bad to worse. "Kids can help help adults recapture our own courage as thinkers. All we have to do is talk to them and take them seriously. Chances are the cleverest person you know can't tie her shoes. But with a well placed why, she can push you past your ability to explain everyday things, or call into question truths you hold dear. She can even help you see the world in a new way."
Why Kids Make the Best Philosophers Adults have a lot to learn from the questions only children are willing to ask.
