Memorial Day Observances

Untold stories about the Black Experience in America prevent others from seeing their shame. The first Memorial Day Observance occurred on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, SC. It was colloquially called, ‘The Race Track Parade’ and “Decoration Day”, to honor of the “Martyrs of the Race Course” , Union soldiers, captured or killed in America’s Civil War.

A crowd of over 10,000 recently freedmen, visiting Black soldiers, and other grateful citizens honored those soldiers who fought for the Freedom of Black Americans during the American Civil War. Then the rest of America needed to heal.

Three years later, May 30, 1868, the Arlington Cemetery is created and celebrated to honor all American soldiers who died on the battlefield. And while the United States celebrates those who shared their blood for Freedom’s name, American Blacks continue to declare our own freedoms and our impossible pains.
