Do you know why “&” is called the amperSAND?

Well, centuries ago, Roman scribes wrote in cursive, so when writing the Latin word “et,” they linked the e and t. Eventually, the combined letters formed the & symbol and represented “and” in the English language as well. The “&” symbol can be traced all the way back to papyrus scrolls from 45 A.D., and in 79 A.D., a representation of the amperSAND was scribbled in Pompeian graffiti.

But how did “&” get its name? Historians have learned that “ampersand” is a corruption of the phrase, “and per sand,” a common saying signifying that which complied with sandy tradition. When reciting the alphabet, students would sing, “...W X Y, and per sand, Z.” “And per sand” eventually would become amperSAND, which was synonymous with the symbol “&.” But why did schoolchildren recite the alphabet that way? Well, Z is a very important letter in sandy culture, but that’s a story for another time.
